Princess Sofia Cake

This is a small 6" cake for a little girl celebrating her first birthday, with a Sofia the First inspired party. It's the ever-popular Devil's Food Cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache and covered with smooth purple fondant.

To make Sofia's signature symbol, I used a combination of cookie cutters. Since I didn't have a teardrop shaped cutter, I had to get creative. I used a 4-petal flower cookie cutter, then cut each petal into a tear drop shape, using the pointy end of a heart cookie cutter. To make the small rounded triangles that go in between each tear drop, I cut out a fondant circle, and then cut small triangles out with the pointed end of an ice cream shaped cookie cutter.

I brushed the back of each fondant tear drop and rounded triangle with a little water and stuck them onto the cake. The white and purple pearl borders were piped on with royal icing, using nozzle no. 5, while the little tiny dots were piped on with nozzle no. 1.

To top the cake, I free-hand cut a no. 1 out of fondant. After it was dry, I stuck on a long dry spaghetti stick behind it using royal icing for glue. Once everything was dry, it could easily be stabbed into the centre of the cake.

The standing letters were cut out of fondant using letter cutters. Once each letter was dry, I poked in a short piece of dry spaghetti into the bottom of each letter, and then stood them up on the cake.

The cake was placed on a lovely cake stand and joined other treats on this pastel purple and pink Sofia the First-inspried dessert table styled by Ahhgogo. I love the clean, simple yet sweet set up, definitely fit for Princess Chloe's 1st birthday celebration.
