Spiderman Cake & Desserts! |
He decided way back in March (yes, March!!) that he wanted a Spiderman-themed birthday. He's always loved Spiderman. (You should see his collection of Spiderman clothes and toys!) He even spent a fair bit of time sketching out a birthday cake design!

Dom also patiently hand-painted (literally!!) all the goodie bags for the party, using red finger paint to make a hand print! He even stuck on and outlined the eyes and wrote the "Thank You" message in fancy font, all by himself! I only helped to draw the web and small spider! Big boy! The goodie bags were filled with Spiderman colouring books, tattoos, crayons, chocolate milk, kit-kats, cookies, and Superhero socks!

I was on the hunt for the perfect venue to celebrate his Spiderman birthday party. My mind immediately went to rock climbing, cuz after all, doesn't Spidey spend a lot of his time climbing and swinging around? Other rock climbing places have a height/age minimum for climbers, so I was really excited to have found The Rock School, a rock climbing school specifically for children, to hold my son's birthday party at! There's an indoor climbing area that's small enough for the younger ones to climb on, with plenty of soft padding on the floor.

For the older, more adventurous kids, there's an outdoor climbing wall, with 3 sections of varying difficulty. The party space is outdoor as well, beside the wall, and consisted of two long picnic tables and benches, and a couple of tables to put the food on.

On top of rock climbing and a foam mask craft, the kids also got to decorate Spider cookies at the party. I baked up some round chocolate-peanut butter cookies, and the kids were given mini peanut butter cups, stick biscuits and royal icing to make Spider cookies! Let me share with you that royal icing NEVER dries in our super humid and hot ambient temperature. Good thing that the kids pretty much at the cookies on the spot once they finished decorating them!

For the the small dessert table, I made cupcakes, cookies, agar-agar jellies and macarons, some custom-labelled kit-kats, and, the birthday cake! It took me a while to convince my son to have the cake in Spiderman colours instead the colour he used in his cake sketch! PS, the ugly striped green and white table cloth was provided by the venue!

The cupcakes are lemon cupcakes, frosted with lemon Swiss meringue buttercream. I added a touch of black to the frosting by streaking the inside of the piping bag with a brush of black food colouring before filling it with frosting and piping the buttercream onto the cupcake with a 1M tip. The cupcakes were decorated with a small red fondant web and a shiny black fondant spider.

The vanilla-lemon sugar cookies were decorated with red royal icing. I made the mistake of piping on the white royal icing eyes while the red layer was still wet, cuz the red totally bled into the white once the cookies had fully dried and were kept in an airtight container for a couple of days. Booooo. Spidey has pink eye! Anyway, I used a black edible food marker to outline the eyes and add the webbing on the cookie.

The red and blue agar-agar jellies were made using a Spiderman face silicone mold (for ice cubes?) which I incidentally purchased at the hospital gift shop last October when my youngest daughter was admitted for pneumonia! Story for another day.

It was a little bit tricky to unmold the jelly, cuz it stuck to the mold. I had to briefly dip it in boiling water before turning it upside down to get the jelly out, which partially melted the surface and some of the detail on the jelly too. Oops.

The macarons were filled with dark chocolate ganache. The shells aren't too deep a red because I figured everything else already had tons of food colouring in it. Ha! I made customised labels for the kit-kats as well, to match the party invitation.

The top tier of the birthday cake was a vanilla butter cake, filled with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. The bottom tier was red velvet cake, filled with cream cheese Swiss meringue buttercream. Yes, it's green, so a least the boy could have some green in the cake, like in his original sketch!

My mom was worried when I told her that I was gonna cover the top tier of the cake in black fondant. She was like what! It's gonna look so dark! Oh, on the contrary, mom. I decided to try out the "melted marshmallow web" technique that I happened to see on this blog over Halloween.
Spider-Dom's birthday cake! |
It's a really simple, albeit super messy, way to get a spiderweb effect on a cake! I melted a bowlful of marshmallows in the microwave, and then let it cool to a point where i could "pick it up" in my hands without burning myself. Then I randomly stretched and draped it over the cake. Voila! Spiderweb! I actually was a little rough when stretching the marshmallow over the edge of the cake, and accidentally tore off some the fondant! But no matter, cuz the tear was easy to cover up, with a little more melted marshmallow!

The bottom tier of the cake was covered in blue fondant, with the black web drawn on using an edible marker. The coolest part of the cake was the hand-cut Spider-Dom sign, done up in Spiderman font! The fragile black spider was a pain to cut out too. The little legs are really delicate! To finish the cake, I made a large, 2D Spiderman fondant face cut-out, and a stylised number 6 to top the cake. The cake board was covered with grey fondant and embossed with a brick pattern for added texture and style.

I love how all the kids wore their favourite Superhero shirts/costumes! Totally added to the party atmosphere. They were all very eager to dig into the the desserts and cake after working up an appetite climbing the walls! Happy 6th Birthday to my big little Spider-Dom!
