Singapore Flag Cake

This year, Singapore celebrates it's 50th year of Independence. In 1965, this little island was "kicked out" of Malaysia and left to fend for itself. And since then, it has managed to turn itself from a 3rd world country, into a 1st class nation, thanks to Singapore's founding father, Mr. Lee Kwan Yew. It's one of the safest, cleanest and most modern countries in the world. Yes, it's a fine city, indeed.

Singapore is 50!

The lady whose daughter I made these Peppa Pig cakes for was having a party with family and friends to celebrate National Day. What better way to celebrate Singapore's birthday than with a giant Singapore flag cake?

rich dark chocolate ganache filling

The cake is 3 sheet pans of Devil's Food Cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. It was a breeze covering this cake, even though it was so wide, thanks to Massa Ticino Fondant Tropic! It's the only fondant I use to cover cakes nowadays!

smooth fondant covering

For the red part of the flag, I mixed some store-brand fondant with the Massa Ticino fondant and it still covered the cake beautifully, without any cracks or tears! Some people dread covering square or rectangular cakes because round cakes just seem so much easier! To get the corners nice and smooth, just lightly stretch the fondant at the bottom of the corner and push the fondant gently upwards until it's smooth. Ha ok sorry I'm not doing a good job explaining.

look, it's the flag of Indonesia!

So, here with the red and white deco, it looks like the flag of Indonesia! Well, Indonesia isn't celebrating it's day of Independece until August 17th (which happens to be my birthday as well!). We have to add the crescent moon and the five stars on the upper left corner of the red part to turn it into the flag of Singapore!

there, now it's the flag of Singapore!

I had to hand-cut the stars with an Xacto knife because I didn't have a star plunger cutter big enough for the size of star that I needed! I cut the crescent moon out using two different sizes of circle cutters.

fondant wording in national colours

To finish the cake, I added "Happy Birthday Singapore" wording, in the national colours of red and white .

To add drama, flair and excitement, the host put golden number sparklers on top of the cake. It is so hard to find these sparklers here! I usually bring a whole bunch back with me in my luggage. So easy to get at the dollar store back home. But, here, they're selling for a whopping $10.60 each!! Crazy.

the final touch - "5" & "0" sparklers*

But seriously, look at the sparkling awesomeness! It's like having a mini fireworks display right in your own home. Happy 50th Birthday, Singapore!
