Happy Animals Rainbow Cake |
Both cake tiers are made out of Devil's Food cake, filled with chocolicious whipped dark chocolate ganache. I seriously could eat this stuff by the spoonful! (Two guesses where the leftover filling goes. Haaa)
The top tier was covered in light blue fondant with hand-cut clouds. Seriously, gotta get myself some cloud cutters with all the clouds I use on my cakes! I've been free-hand cutting the clouds using a sharp paring knife....
The bottom tier is covered in white fondant, to let the border of rainbow balls and the birthday girl's name stand out. I also made some Happy Birthday lettering using a silicone mold. Lovin' the Roy G. Bv (yep, no indigo).
For the animals on the cake, the mummy wanted the horse and cow to be like the ones I did on this happy windmill farm cake, and the girafffe to be like the one on this cake.
It was a wet, humid, rainy day, which meant it was going to be a challenge getting the cake from the car to the party room without getting wet! The fondant animals started to sweat from the humidity the second I stepped out of the air-conditioned car! It didn't help that the car park and the function room were quite a walk away (luckily it was a covered walk-way, but there were a few leaky areas though!). The birthday girl's mummy had to come meet me and put an umbrella over the cake so that it wouldn't get wet!
Anyway, the cake made it to the party (mostly) dry and in one piece. The condensation on the animals evaporated after about half and hour and then it was safe for me to touch them and place them on the cake. If you touch them while they are still wet, you will probably leave fingerprint marks on them!
I ended up putting the Happy Birthday on top of the cake cuz there was just no room left on the middle tier. The letters fit perfectly on the top of half of the 6" cake. I really like how all the colours turned out! Such a happy cake, indeed!

cute little cow. Moo. |
To top the cake, I made a tall, colourful fondant rainbow, with a cute "cool" sun. The rays make the sun look like he's in motion for some reason?

Here are a couple of pics courtesy of the birthday girl's mummy. She put together a neat dessert table for her guests to enjoy. I love the simple "ONE" on baby's high chair! Happy 1st Birthday, super cute baby Kayleigh!
