Shimmer & Shine Pillow Cake

Here's a larger, chocolate cake version of the Shimmer & Shine pillow cake I made last month, this time, for a little gal celebrating her 3rd birthday!

Shimmer & Shine Pillow Cake*

I baked the cake up in a large sheet pan, and then cut it up to make a 3-layer, 9" square cake, and then used a serrated knife to carve it into a "pillow' shape. After dirty icing, and then smoothing on a second coat of buttercream, I draped a nice shade of teal fondant over the cake, carefully working the edges to get a nice smooth finish.

I used a rolling quilting tool to indent the fondant surface to get the criss-cross pattern, and then used some royal icing to stick little gold dragees where the lines meet. For the rope border, I used a fondant extruder to make a long fondant snake, and then twisted that into a rope, again using royal icing to stick it onto the cake. A coat of Rolkem Super Gold always adds glam feel to anything!

I also made the glittery gold number 3 fondant "candle" on the cake. I cut up a small candle and stuck it to the top of the fondant number 3 using thick royal icing, and then painted the whole thing gold!

The birthday girl looks so adorable in her matching genie outfit! Her mummy arranged Shimmer and Shine toys on top of the cake to finish it off. Happy 3rd Birthday, Ava!
