Choo Choo Train Cake

So this birthday turned out to be a happy story after all. The birthday boy fell sick with HFMD a week before his party, and he was sad at the prospect of cancelling the celebration. His mummy had already pre-empted that they would have to postpone both the family and school celebrations and had let me know that it was all to be a week later. But, a couple of days later, the birthday boy was given the all clear by the doctor, and the party was a go! (Though it was a bit stressful for me to have to re-slot in the cake orders at the last minute amidst a very busy week already!!)

fun choo-choo train cake

The train cake was a large 4-layer devil's food cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. This flavour is definitely a crowd-pleaser and remains the most popular flavour to get!

The design is straightforward, with the cake being draped in sky blue fondant, and bordered with rolling green hills and some clouds in the sky.

The fun part was making the 3D train cars and the engine out of fondant! All the little details like the windows, star "spokes" on the wheels and the steam funnels make all the difference and add to the whimsical, fun look of the cake.

all those little details

I decorated the cake board with train tracks going all the way around, embossing the grey fondant underneath the tracks using a cobblestone impression mat.

Boy, the birthday kid sure was happy to see his cake! Here are some pics from the party, kindly shared by his mummy. Happy 3rd Birthday, Alphonsus!

Happy 3rd Birthday, little prince!
