Blue Baby Shower Cake & Desserts

Breaking up all the festive reds and greens of Christmas bakes, I got to make a blue baby shower cake and desserts to celebrate a baby boy's 100 days. Chinese folks traditionally celebrate the baby's first hundred days of life cuz back in the day, before modernization, conditions were rough, full of illness and disease, and babies were considered lucky to survive the first 100 days! Another belief is that the celebration is held to wish the baby 100 years of life.

Baby Shower Cake

So for baby Elijah's 100 day celebration, I got to make a cake, cupcakes and cookies. The cake was the ever popular devil's food cake filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. It was decorated with a sculpted sleeping baby angel topper. I didn't have a sleeping baby mould so I had to sculpt this little dude from scratch. Here's what he looks like, all naked before I put the wings on.

I didn't have a silicone mould for the wings either, so I just used a veiner tool to draw a pair of wings on some white fondant, and cut that out with a sharp knife. To add more "feathers" to the wings, I used a scalloped circle cutter to cut more fondant pieces and layer them onto the wings, using the veiner tool to indent lines to make them more like feathers.

I added a pair of booties and a little baby rattle on the fondant-covered cake board as well, keeping the style simple and clean.

The paper bunting topper is from All Mommy Wants. To get the straws to stand taller on the cake, I stabbed in a pair of BBQ skewers into the cake first, and then threaded the straws onto the skewers. That way, the paper bunting would be properly supported and not flop over.

Now for the cupcakes, they were red velvet cupcakes frosted with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream dyed a light blue. The fondant toppers were also handcrafted (really wish I had a silicone mould for baby stuff!), with my fave being the teeny tiny feet with teeny tiny toes.

The cookies were decorated with fondant as well, cuz the mummy wanted to give people the option of removing the fondant sugar coating before eating to reduce sweetness (which you really can't do with a royal icing iced cookie).

The customer set up a simple but nice dessert table for the occasion, putting cookies and cream Hershey Kisses to good use to spell out baby's name! Welcome, baby Elijah, and happy 100 days!

Happy 100 Days, baby Elijah!
