Robocar Poli cake |
I haven't made a Robocar Poli cake yet, so it's always fun to do something new! The cake is meant to have fed 30 pax, but as I was carving out the cake, I thought it would make sense to just carve less off, so that the overall cake is bigger! I used a full sheet cake and a 10" round cake (crowd favourite Devil's food cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache) to make up the shape of Robocar Poli. Lots of scraps leftover, but I'll use them for cake pops, so no waste :)
carving the cake into shape |
The cake was so big that is was essentially a 2-tier cake. I had the top half of the car on its own cake board and put in support dowels in the bottom part of the cake so that the cake was sturdy enough to support its own weight and not implode.
ready for a crumb coat |
After I had carved it (with my trusty steak knife!) into a shape I was happy with, I crumb coated the entire thing in Swiss meringue buttercream and let it chill in the fridge.
My arms were sore from rolling out a big enough sheet of blue fondant to drape over the cake, and as usual, trusty Massa Ticino Fondant Tropic never fails to cover even a double-tall, non-standard shape without cracking or tearing! Love this brand.
back of the car |
Car cakes are fun to do cuz it's all about the little details! The windows, trimming, lights, bumper, wheels etc. really bring Poli to life! The last thing to put on were his eyes and mouth, and boom, hello Robocar Poli!
little smile |
Am so glad to hear that the birthday boy and his family loved the cake! Happy 2nd Birthday, Aryan!
