Happy 150th Birthday, Canada! There would be tons of places to celebrate this momentous occasion back home, with lots of food trucks, face-painting and fireworks, but in Singapore, there really is only one event to celebrate Canada's birthday: at Canada Day 150!, hosted by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore.

Canada Day Cookies |
I got to know of the event because the sister of my old coworker from my Safeway days (a loong time ago!) happens to be working for CanCham here in Singapore and I'm on the mailing list! So of course I signed up. Got my kids all excited about it too, and we headed down to the big tent at the Museum of Contemporary Arts, all dressed in red & white!

But I wanted to make something special to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday, so I made some sugar cookies! The official Canada 150 logo is this colourful maple leaf, which was designed by a 19-year old student from the University of Waterloo in Ontario. The 13 different diamonds represent the 10 provinces and 3 territories, while the colours represent the country's diversity. I knew right away that I wanted to translate this logo into cookie-form! (the abstract "sectional" design reminds me of Singapore's 51st National day logo, which I also made into cookies last year.)

so many colours! |
I had to hand-cut the special maple leaf shape cuz the only maple leaf cutter I had was a super mini cookie cutter (which I also made teeny maple leaf cookies with!), and I cut out some regular maple leaves too.

Since I already had the royal icing prepared and coloured, decorating the cookies took no time at all. I just had to be careful to fill in the sections of the logo cookie so that the different colours didn't run into each other.
For the teeny maple leaf cookies, I dipped them into the royal icing instead of flooding and filling. Much easier this way!

heat-sealed and ready to go |
So off we went to the Canada Day 150! celebration, cookies in hand and individually wrapped for freshness.

The party was great. There were lots of activities for the kids to do, like colouring, inflatable air hockey, a lego table, tattoos, and of course, hockey!

And as for the food, there was a buffet full of Canadian favourites like poutine, roasted chicken, butter tarts and Nanaimo bars! (I really wish they had beaver tails though!)

feasting, Canadian-style! |
There was even a real-life Mountie in full uniform! Poor guy must've been sweating so badly in the heat and humidity. I've got to give it to him for his spirit though!

Heather McDonald, the High Commissioner of Canada to Singapore, made a celebratory speech, then they showed a kids' movie, served popcorn, sang the national anthem (& Singapore's too!), had some trivia questions and the lucky draw, of which the grand prize was airfare for 2 to anywhere in Canada! Too bad we didn't win!
