A couple of years ago, I got to make this blue ombré buttercream ruffle cake topped with the birthday boy's fave stuffed toy bunny. I love how his parents think out of the box, with unusual toppers for cake, and now we have gone from that cute l'il bunny to this scary monster!

Scary Robot cake topper |
I don't normally make just the cake topper without making the entire cake, but this was for an unusual character that looked like it would be fun to make. I was sent this image as reference and the first thought that I had in mind was "whoa?! this is for a 3-year old?!" Hahaaa.

Anyway, I wanted to make the cake topper fully edible, so the inside is a big Rice Krispie treat ball. I used Rice Krispies instead of making the whole ball out of fondant cuz it is much lighter than fondant! Didn't want the topper sinking into the cake.

all the little details that make this guy look fierce |
For the "spikes" I added the detail on using edible ink food markers and then stuck them onto the topper using royal icing. I also used royal icing for the rivets around the eyes.
Anyway, the birthday boy's mummy put this scary monster guy on top a store-bought cake from Prima Deli (they have really nice rainbow sponge cakes!). Still didn't look like a cake for a 3-year old to me!

But little Jayden was really happy with his cake! Here are some pics from his birthday celebration at school, shared by his mummy!

Happy 3rd Birthday, Jayden!! |
Anyway, I actually had no idea where this monster character is from and only found out after chatting with the client after she picked up the topper from me! Apparently it's a robot from the Tayo the bus cartoon? I seriously don't recall seeing something so scary in a cartoon meant for kindergarteners.... so I Googled "tayo scary robot" and boom, got a few hits. So this robot isn't from the original Tayo series. It's from those strange "homemade" productions that mash toy characters together to form a unique storyline. And in this series the robots go out of their way to make trouble for Tayo and his friends. (the robot leader is named "Bully"!) Funny what captures the attention of kids these days!

Hope you're not disappointed that you didn't get to see the familiar Tayo the little blue bus in this post! And if you are, here's a more typical Tayo the bus cake for you!
