How does Batman's mother call him home for dinner? ... (cue Batman song) "Dinner, dinner, dinner, dinner, Batman!!" Hahah ok, ok jokes aside, I was looking forward to making this Lego Batman-themed cake & desserts for baby Denzel's 1st birthday celebration, after making his smash cake for the photoshoot last week. My kids and I really enjoyed the Lego Batman movie that came out last month, so all the characters were fresh in my mind. For the Lego Batman party, I got to make the birthday cake, marshmallow pops, cake pops, cookies, jelly cups and the cake!

Lego Batman Cake & Desserts |
As Batman says, he only "[works] in black, and sometimes very very dark grey" but these colours would make for a drab dessert table, so I wanted to throw in some Joker & Robin colours in there to brighten things up!

Lego Batman, Joker & Robin Marshmallow Pops |
Marshmallows have the perfect shape for Lego heads, since they're square-ish. And marshmallow pops are great cuz they don't have that cracking issue that cake pops do. So for the Joker & Robin marshmallow pops, I dipped them in white chocolate (dyed peach for Robin). For their hair, I waited 'til the chocolate was completely cool and slightly thickened before piping it on, or else it would've just run together and not have that nice texture.

Lego Batman Marshmallow Pops |
For Batman's "ears", I cut mini marshmallows diagonally in half, and then stuck them onto large marshmallows using some melted chocolate. The Batman marshmallow pops were dipped in dark chocolate dyed black using powdered food colouring. The characters' eyes and mouths were cut out of fondant. The bat symbol was free-hand piped on the marshmallow pops using the same black dark chocolate.

Lego Robin, Batman & Joker Cake Pops |
I was excited to make these Lego Batman cake pops cuz they weren't the normal round cake pops on a lollipop stick. Instead, I made mini "popsicle" cake pops out of vanilla-sprinkles cake! In much the same way as the marshmallow pops, I did Lego Batman, Robin and the Joker. The brilliant idea of displaying them on a Lego base plate I got from Hokey Pokey, when they did a Lego Movie Batman petite dessert table last week! I really love how these guys came out!

Lego Batman "popsicle" cake pops! |
For the cookies, I did a full cookie bouquet set, using different cookie-cutter shapes, and hand-cutting the full body Batman and face with a knife from cookie dough! Denzel's mommy wanted to stick to Batman's traditional colours for these cookies, which actually made my job easier cuz I only had to dye the royal icing yellow, black and (2 shades) of grey!
|
Lego Batman cookies in progress |
I had to make sure that the base yellow icing on the bat symbols cookies dried completely before filling in with black royal icing, cuz there's always the concern of bleeding colours when there are two drastically different (very dark, very light) colours of royal icing side by side. Lego Batman also involved a bit of work, piping the royal icing one section at a time (leg sections, arms sections, cape etc), waiting 'til it dried, before piping on the next section, or else all that wet icing would run into each other and you'd just end up with a black royal icing cookie without Batman's details!
For the lettering on the name cookies, I cut them out of fondant using Clickstix to make my life easier, sticking them onto the cookies with a little bit of water brushed onto the back after they had dried. I used a black edible ink marker to draw on Batman's mouth and the for the tiny bat symbol on his chest. To draw on Batman's abs, I just scratched the surface of the royal icing using a scribe tool! It is much easier than trying to paint on the abs using a teeny tiny brush (cuz that's how I tried to do it at first!!)

Details on the full-body Lego Batman cookie! |
I love how the birthday boy's mummy was so easy to work with. She pretty much gave me free reign on the designs for all the desserts, cake included! Keeping the cake design consistent with the other desserts, I did one tier for Joker, one tier for Robin, and topped the whole thing with a giant Batman!
|
Lego Batman Cake! |
The cake was the ever-popular, decadent Devil's food cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. For Joker's hair, I used a raindrop-shaped cookie cutter and stuck on each cutout, piece by piece. Robin's hair was made out of strips of chocolate fondant and layered on, with the "bangs" in a nice textured wave.

Lego Batman Movie Robin & Joker tiers |
The large Lego Batman topper was moulded out of Rice Krispy treats so that it would be light enough to put on top of the cake. Boy, did it take a lot of black fondant to completely cover this guy! His ears were actually a fluke, a product of the leftover black fondant that I was suppose to cut off after wrapping his head, but instead turned out to be in the perfect position and amount to form his ears! And this time, I did end up using a teeny brush to paint on his abs will silver metallic food colouring. I used 2 BBQ skewers to stand him up on the cake, and let's just say it was a scary, careful drive over to the venue with the large Batman perched on top of the 2-tier cake!

"I'm Batman" - Lego Movie Batman |
Here's how all these Lego Batman-themed desserts and cake came together, on this awesome dessert table styled in collaboration with One and Only Gallery! I love the backdrop design and the giant Lego Batman cutout! The really cool chalkboard was designed by the birthday boy's mummy's talented friend.

Lego Batman Dessert Table |
I borrowed my friend's giant Lego head storage container to display as a prop, but it dawned on me while setting up, that it would make the perfect cake stand! I finally got to use my cool grey slate plate too! Love how things fall perfectly into place sometimes :)
