Pokémon Cookies

With all the Pokémon frenzy going on, it's not surprising that more people are choosing this as a theme for their kids' birthday parties. But it is surprising that I haven't done a single Pokémon cake yet! I've only done simple round Pikachu face cookies & Pokéball cake pops so far, so I was very excited when asked to create Pikachu, Lapras, Dragonite & Snorlax cookies!

Pokémon Cookies

Gotta catch'em all!

But see, after having committed to the order, I started panicking after Googling who all these characters where. Holy complicated, Batman! Did I mention I had to make 50 of them?? I managed to import Pikachu and Snorlax cookie cutters in time, but are there cookie cutters for Dragonite & Lapras? Nope.

free-hand drawing the outlines

So I gritted my teeth, printed out images and used them as a template, and "lovingly" hand-cut these guys from the cookie dough using my favourite steak knife. After all the cookies were baked and cooled, I free-hand drew the characters on the cookies using an black edible ink marker. I'm telling you after all those Pikachus, I can draw him with my eyes closed now. Pre-drawing on the cookies means not having to free-hand them with royal icing later (cuz I'm just not that talented!) and cuz I don't have a fancy Kopykake projector, which allows you to trace images directly onto the cookie itself!

so many Pikachus waving an enthusiastic hello!

I then went back and re-drew the character outlines with black royal icing, and then let the outlines dry before filling them in with coloured royal icing. Snorlax is a tricky shade of dark teal, and I only realized after I had finished all the cookies, that his feet are suppose to be beige like his face and tummy! Oh well.

The finer details, like eyebrows and Dragonite's belly stripes, were drawn on using a fine-tipped edible ink marker. Dragonite & Snorlax' claws were piped on using stiffer consistency royal icing.

I let the cookies dry overnight in an air-conditioned room, before individually packaging them. I had to put gold-foil cardboard behind the cookies for support, because some of the parts were delicate (like Pikachu's ears, Dragonite's tail etc).

Lapras Cookies

My fave colour - blue!

I love love love how this Pokémon cookie army turned out! What brings me the most satisfaction is knowing that the people that received these Pokémon cookies as holiday gifts were super happy, making all the hard work adding in all the little details, totally worth it.  :D
