Monster Jam Cake

Huge trucks. Crushing Cars. Fireworks and flying vehicles. What more could a boy want! Monster Jams aren't really that well known here cuz there haven't ever been any Monster Truck shows in the country. And one doesn't exactly see any of these beasts being driven around on the street on an average day either! (can you imagine what the COE would be on this monstrosity?) But our birthday boy is a huge Monster Truck fan. His favourite is, of course, Grave Digger! I've been lucky enough to see this beast in action at a full blown Monster Jam!

Monster Jam Cake

So, for his birthday, he wanted a Monster Jam cake, with green and purple colours for his favourite Grave Digger team! The cake is a double Oreo cake, made with black cocoa powder, and filled with layers of luscious vanilla bean crème Mousseline (yep, six egg yolks!!) and lots of chopped Oreo cookies in between. The birthday boy LOVES Oreos.

His mummy wanted minimal fondant on the cake, and she gave me free reign on the design. I carved the cake into a scene from Monster Jam, with the "spectators" at the back, and two big ramps in the pit.

check out the Monster Truck army!

The entire cake was covered with dark chocolate ganache. The "spectators area" was sprinkled with rainbow nonpareils, and checkered with white and black vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. I piped a buttercream grass border around the cake, and finished off the front with purple and green fondant flag bunting.

The birthday boy's mummy helped to make the paper checkered flags and the large paper sign toppers. To finish the cake, at the venue, we piled a bunch of cars in the pit, and had two Grave Digger trucks on the ramps, ready to be airborne! I used a couple of toothpicks behind the trucks'  rear tires to prevent them from sliding backward off of the ramps.

The birthday boy has quite a big collection of Monster Trucks, and they made their appearance at his birthday party! Check out the cake with the army of Monster Trucks! Too cool.

Since Monster Truck party stuff is pretty much unavailable here, the lucky birthday boy's mummy helped to import them in from the US: the Monster Jam balloons, the tattoos, and even the orange party napkins! I love the cool Monster Jam table cloth and the customised stickers on the goodie bags too!

It was a bit of a challenge getting all the kids behind the cake, and, as you can see from the pic below, the Monster Truck army has been decimated! All those teeny hands are really quick at snatching! The cake looks pretty cool with the purple candles all lit up and the Monster Trucks flying in the air!

the cake all lit up, with monster trucks flying high!

The birthday boy and his mummy & daddy were all smiles for sure! That's why I love making cakes, to create happiness and see the smiles on excited faces! So glad the birthday boy and all his guests enjoyed the special double Oreo cake! Even the older folks enjoyed this not-too-sweet cake. Happy 5th Birthday, monster Julian!

big happy smiles! :D

slices of Oreo cake. "Now that's the stuff!"
