Peppa Pig House Cake and mini Cupcakes

I've been making lots of little piggies. Peppa Pig and her family piggies, that is! I got to make this Peppa Pig family car cake yesterday for a lucky little girl, who celebrated her birthday at home. For her birthday celebration at school, Peppa Pig-style too, here's a Peppa Pig House cake!

Peppa Pig's House

The cake is 8 layers of Devil's Food Cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache and chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream! It was a pretty tall cake! I used a styrofoam triangle for the upper part of the house, since there was already more than enough cake to go around.

nice sharp, clean edges

Making a house cake is pretty straightforward. The key is to take measurements and make straight, neat cuts in the fondant. This gives the house a very clean, sharp look. It is also important to get the buttercream crumb coat nice and flat because any bumps will show through the fondant covering.

The roof of the house is made by rolling an impression roller over fondant, cutting rectangular strips out, and then letting the strips dry before placing them on the cake. The antenna is dark chocolate fondant, supported with a skewer in the middle. Dark chocolate fondant is the only kind I'll eat, because it tastes like a tootsie roll!

I made the fondant figurines, with a "side view" of the Pig family so that they would look different that the figurines on Peppa Pig car cake. My favourite character of the bunch is Mummy Pig, only because she has awesome eyelashes. Those were drawn on using black edible food marker.

Happily playing in "mud"

I covered the cake board in fondant, using an impression roller to give it more texture. I like covering the board in addition to the cake because it makes everything look more professionally finished. To attach Peppa Pig and her family on the cake board, I whipped up some dark chocolate ganache and smeared it on too look like mud. Pigs aren't happier anywhere else, right? And this kind of mud is absolutely delicious.

red velvet mini cupcakes

The mini cupcakes are red velvet, frosted with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. The Peppa & George Pig toppers were done without any molds or cutters. Took me longer than I expected, but I wanted to be sure that they were well done. Decorating mini cupcakes is much more challenging than regular-sized cupcakes. The smaller you go, the harder it is to make the details. At 3.2 cm in diameter, these cupcakes were mini, indeed!

Just because this is a birthday celebration at school, it doesn't mean it's just a birthday cake and song...not for mummy Sugarena, anyway! She put together a cute mini dessert table, full of yummy Peppa Pig-themed goodies for the birthday girl and her classmates. The teachers were probably worried about the sugar-high children that they'd have to deal with afterwards!

The dessert table also featured Peppa Pig sugar cookies and Peppa & George Pig cake pops like yesterday's birthday celebration. Vereesa's mummy was kind enough to give me a couple cans of custom-wrapped Pringles and Kit-Kat bars from the party. I love how the custom label includes a few fun facts about the birthday girl. My kids gobbled these snacks up as soon as they got home from school.
