Peppa Pig Car Cake, Cookies and Cake Pops

I was looking forward to making this Peppa Pig car cake. It's been a while since I've done any carved cakes and my fingers were itchy! Lots of little girls are into Peppa Pig these days, including my little girl, even though the series isn't even shown on TV here! Those toy stores sure know how to market their goods. We even brought a Peppa Pig cookie jar filled with Peppa Pig cookies back with us from our trip to Melbourne last year. Couldn't leave the store with out it, apparently.

The car cake is a lemon cake filled with lemon curd and lemon Swiss meringue buttercream. Lemon is the birthday girl's mummy's favourite flavour! I love lemon as a cake flavour because it is tart and a nice break from the usual chocolate. Plus, if you've had a big meal, lemon cake is the perfect dessert. (Though there's always room for dessert in my book, no matter what flavour!)

Funnily enough, I baked the cake in my Spongebob Squarepants pan, because it's the only rectangular pan I have. It was the perfect size for the car. I only carved off the sides and curved the front bit to make it into the perfect shape for Peppa Pig's family car.

I actually made all the fondant figurines first, so that they had ample time to dry before placing them on the car. Actually, fondant figurines can be made way in advance and stored in an airtight container once they're dry. Fondant lasts forever! I still have the fondant booties from my son's baptism cake, and he's turning 6 this year!

Fondant figurines of Peppa Pig & her family

Anyway, the only thing I didn't make ahead of time were Daddy Pig's arms. I stuck those on last after I had placed the Pig Family in their car since Daddy Pig has to hold the steering wheel to drive. Good thing I remembered to put the steering wheel on the right side of the car!

After filling and crumb coating the cake and letting it firm up in the fridge, I covered it in fondant. I made sure to use a fondant smoother to help roll out the long snakes for the details on the car, so that they were nice and even, without those bumps that you can see if you roll a snake with your fingers. The windshield on the car is a piece of thick plastic, attached on the cake with some red royal icing. If you want it to be edible, you can always melt some sugar and water in a sheet pan and make sugar glass, but I didn't want to mess with that.

To give the cake a finished look, I also covered the cake board with fondant, green to look like grass. I used a striped roller to add texture as well. Mini fondant daisies added nice accents around the car. The final touch was to add the birthday girl's name on the car's license plate. I had to do it three times because I kept mis-spelling her name! Unbelievable.

In addition to the cake, I also got to make cookies and cake pops. I had to order the large Peppa Pig cookie cutter off of eBay because I couldn't find them for sale anywhere. The sugar cookies are decorated in fondant and were done without the use of stencils.

Peppa & George Pig Cake Pops

The cake pops are chocolate cake, crumbled and swirled with chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream. I like to weigh each portion so that the balls are of even size. George Pig is actually 4 grams lighter than Peppa Pig. Do check out my cake pops basics page for more tips on how to make cake pops. The cake balls were frozen and then dipped into candy melts, red for Peppa and blue for George. The Peppa & George heads were provided by Sugarena, and they transformed simple red and blue cake pops into super cute Peppa & George Pig cake pops!

Peppa Pig Dessert Table*

Super mummy Sugarena set up all the goodies on a cute and colourful dessert table, for Vereesa's birthday celebration at home. The dessert table looks like a scene from the Peppa Pig cartoon! I love how there are mini trees on either side of the car cake. Love it! And I love the Peppa Pig family house in the backdrop and the cartoon sun in the backdrop. Can't wait to make that house cake for Vereesa's birthday celebration at school.

Apparently the birthday girl didn't want any of the other goodies, except the car! I bet she thought it was a toy. I do hope somebody gifted her an actual Peppa Pig Family Car for her birthday. Happy 3rd birthday to sweet Vereesa!
