Superman & Spiderman Superhero Cake

This two-tiered Superman & Spiderman Superhero cake is for a joint birthday for a daddy and his superhero-loving son. The 8" cake is a Devil's food cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache and iced with chocolate French buttercream. Mmm chocolate. It's the most popular flavour! The top tier is a 5" styrofoam dummy. Actually, I bought a long, half-cylindrical styrofoam, cut it couple pieces 4 inches long and glued the two halves together. That way I could make the height of the dummy match the height of the cake!

All the details on the cake are made out of fondant, except the spiderweb, which I piped on using royal icing dyed black. Next time I will pre-mark where to pipe first so that the web is even! There's no erasing black royal icing... I had a lot fun making the buildings and the windows. I was imagining that tiny little people lived or worked in them! Haaaa.

The Superman "S" was hand-cut out of fondant using a sharp X-acto knife. I free-hand drew it out on a piece of paper first, cut it out and then used it like a stencil to cut the fondant "S" out. The birthday boy's mummy also wanted a red cape on one side of the cake, so I put that on too. I slightly wrinkled a thinly-rolled piece of fondant so that it would look like a cape.

I left some space on the left side of the cake and of course, on top of the cake because the birthday boy's mummy is going to use Spiderman and Superman action figures as cake toppers. I will update this post when she sends me the pic of the final cake.
