The celebration would have about 70 guests, so I made this really massive 4-layer chocolate cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache and iced with chocolate French buttercream and decorated with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream! The cake easily weighs more than my 10 month old baby girl. I have a backache from lifting it on and off of the table!! Better to have more cake than not enough, right?

Matthew's mum is going to top the cake with a whole bunch of his construction trucks. The mound of dirt in the middle is also chocolate cake, frosted with whipped dark chocolate ganache and covered in chocolate rocks. The strip of road on the cake is made out of fondant. I used a grass piping tip to pipe grass all over the cake. I like to drag the bag in different directions so that the grass looks more natural.

There were three flavours for the 4 dozen cupcakes: chocolate, red velvet and strawberry. I frosted all the cupcakes with chocolate French buttercream and sprinkled it with some crushed Oreo-like biscuits to make them looks like they're "dirty". Hehe. Covered it dirt!! Come on.

The construction site cake (topped with the birthday boy's construction trucks) and cupcakes were featured on the the super cool construction birthday party table set up by Lovewithdetails! The custom cut out truck signs, yellow and black construction tape banner & of course all the birthday boy's construction trucks really brought the theme to life! Happy 3rd Birthday, Matthew!!
