Plants vs. Zombies Cake Pops & Push Pops

My friend's son was celebrating his 7th birthday and he wanted Potato Mine and Winter Melon cake pops as giveaways for his guests. I had no idea what those were!! Apparently, they are characters from the game Plants vs. Zombies! I'm so glad he chose the cute characters. I don't know how appealing a zombie would be to eat! And, as far as I can tell, these Potato Mine & Winter Melon cake pops are the first of their kind cuz I can't find any other ones on Google or other Social Media platforms! Yay!! And, I also got to make push pop cakes for his birthday party.

Push Pop Cake and Potato Mine & Winter Melon Cake Pops

I cannot get over how cute these cake pops turned out! It's the eyes, I tell ya. Those round white dots just give these little guys more sparkle and life. Potato Mine is made out of chocolate cake and is coated in white chocolate mixed with a little bit of dark chocolate to give it a light brown colour. For a detailed how-to on cake pop-making, do check out my cake pops basics page

Potato Mine

Potato Mine's eyes, mouth and red ball are made out of fondant. The stick poking out of his head is a Pocky stick, attached on using some royal icing. The "rocks" underneath are brown mini m&m's, which were attached on with dark chocolate. I made the craters on Potato Mine's head by lightly indenting the chocolate coating with a ball tool, after it had dried.

Winter Melon
Winter Melon has a vanilla cake base, and is coated in white chocolate dyed blue with candy oil. I piped the light blue candy melt lines on after the dark blue coating had dried. WInter Melon's face and the leaf underneath are made out of fondant. I used a calyx cutter to cut the leaves out of green fondant.

Cuteness overload.

The Potato Mine & Winter Melon cake pops are really too cute to eat! I'm loving the Winter Melon blue and the goofy teeth on Potato Mine. I'm sure the birthday boy and his guests are gonna love them.

Adorable Plants vs. Zombies Cake Pops!

All wrapped up as giveaways to party guests

The push pop cakes are alternating layers of strawberry and red velvet cake, with fresh strawberry Swiss meringue buttercream sandwiched in between each layer. It was my first time making these push pop cakes and it took a while to get the hang of balancing the plastic stick and layering the cake and buttercream without smudging the cream onto the sides of the plastic cylinder! I topped the final layer of cream with some white chocolate chips before snapping the lid on the push pop.

Push Pop Cake

And, if you don't have a styrofoam block to stand the push pop cakes on, I discovered that toilet paper rolls are the perfect vessel to hold a single push pop cake standing up because the cardboard tube in the middle allows the stick part of the push pop to hang out, while the hole in the cardboard tube is the perfect diameter for the push pop cake to rest on! Of course, it wouldn't be nice to serve push pop cakes on toilet paper rolls at the party... that's why the birthday boy and his sister are making a nicer push pop cake stand out of old shoebox!

Push Pop Cakes topped with white chocolate chips

These push pop cakes are becoming more and more popular these days, probably because they are visually appealing (especially when the layers are rainbow colours!) and are much easier to eat than a slice of cake, especially for kids. No plate or fork required.

Happy Happy Birthday to big boy Isaac! Enjoy your Plants vs. Zombies cake pops and the push pops!
