Angry Birds Space Party Goodies!

Warning: this is a long post! Thanks for reading :)

My son, Dominic, just turned FIVE! I can't believe that he's 5 years old already! It was only after his first birthday when I made this 3D lion cake for him, that family and friends encouraged me to continue baking and decorating cakes! Man, time just blew by. My little boy is on his way to becoming a big man already.

So, to celebrate this milestone birthday, Domi requested for an Angry Birds Swimming Party. I couldn't help myself but go all out with the bakes and party planning for his big day: Marzipan Bad Piggies, Angry Bird sugar cookies, Space Angry Bird cake pops, macarons, cupcakes, and of course, a 3D cake, featuring all the Space Angry Bird characters! All these goodies, combined with custom party styling, made the dessert table one fantastic set-up, done by Lovewithdetails!

Angry Birds Space Dessert Table

I really wanted to feature marzipan on the dessert table because unlike fondant, marzipan is made out of ground almonds, so it actually tastes pretty good! Also, it is not so common. The first time I worked with marzipan, I made some fruits & my family, in pig form! The marzipan I used for these Bad Piggies was the ready made marzipan which is already mixed with icing sugar. I coloured the marzipan green using Americolor Electric green for the pigs' main body, ears and snout. Their eyes and other embellishments were made out of fondant. I used a black Americolor Gourmet Food Writer to draw on their facial features.

These Bad Piggies were super fun to make! I tried to make a variety of Bad Piggie characters: King Pig, Foreman Pig, Corporal Pig and Minion Pigs. Their expressions really give each of them their own character.

These red Angry Bird vanilla sugar cookies were decorated with royal icing, which I made using Wilton's royal icing pre-mix because I didn't want to make it from scratch using raw egg whites since kids would be eating these at the party. I used 20 second icing to outline & detail and 10 second icing to fill.

For the cake pops, I wanted to make them extra special, so instead of just crumbling up cake the way you would with regular cake pops, I made Rainbow cake! Six different colours of vanilla cake were baked and crumbled and swirled with vanilla buttercream, and then formed into these rainbow cake balls!

The rainbow cake balls were then attached to these cute yellow and white paper straws and then dipped in red candy melts and rolled in red sanding sugar. The Space Angry Birds' eyes, beaks and bellies were made out of fondant. Their crowns are red m&m's. The party guests really had a nice surprise when they bit into the cake pops and discovered the rainbow inside!

I didn't decorate the macarons in the form of angry birds, but I did make them in yellow and blue complimentary colours to match the other bakes. The yellow macarons are filled with passionfruit French buttercream and the blue ones are filled with vanilla French buttercream, with a dollop of tart lemon curd in the middle.

Not really sure why the colour in this picture is off, but the ones in the middle really did bake up a sort of lighter blue, almost greenish in colour, cuz I left them in the oven five minutes longer than the others. They're filled with passionfruit buttercream too.

For the cupcakes, some were red velvet frosted with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream, and the rest were blackout chocolate cupcakes, frosted with chocolate buttercream. The cupcakes were decorated with Bomb (the Black Bird) and The Blues fondant toppers.

For the cake, Domi requested it to be lemon flavoured. The boy is into sour things these days! I used the juice and zest of 12 lemons in the lemon cake, the lemon curd and the lemon Swiss meringue buttercream! Pucker up, cuz this cake packs a big tart lemon punch!

A moon with lots of craters

I wanted to do a cake that fit with the Space Angry Birds theme, so I decorated the base cake with marbled black and dark blue fondant to give it a "spacey" feel. The 2nd tier of cake was decorated to look like a moon, with lots of craters! I used the ball tool to dent the fondant, and then dry brushed black luster dust in the craters to give it more depth.

Initially I only intended to make the red, green and blue birds to top the cake, but after having so much fun making those, I decided to make the rest of the Space Angry Bird characters! (I just realized I missed out the orange Atomic bird. aaah!) Anyway, I love love all their little details. My fave is the Incredible Terence (green) bird! The capes on the Firebomb Bird and the Lazer Bird were so fun to make. Of course, I had to make the slingshot as well, which was made out of dark chocolate fondant.

Lovewithdetails really did a fantabulous job with the set up and styling of the dessert table! There was a custom-made Space Angry Bird banner and custom-made signs for all the goodies, not to mention all the intricate cutting and gluing that took place for the details on the balloons, the backdrop, the table decor and the wooden block structure that housed the marzipan pigs! It really was the ultimate dessert table! The birthday boy was super excited to see the set up and he couldn't wait to dig in! *photos courtesy of lovewithdetails.
