Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Cake & Desserts

Mickey Mouse is still a really popular theme for 1st birthdays these days! Even though there are many new cartoons coming out, Mickey is just a timeless classic. For this birthday celebration, I got to make cookies, macarons, cupcakes, cake pops, and the birthday cake, all in the traditional Mickey colours of red, black and yellow.

The Mickey cookies are sugar cookies decorated using fondant. As usual, I like to keep the fondant layer as thin as possible, making sure to cut the red and black fondant to shape and then splice them together, instead of just layering the red fondant on top of the black, which would result in a too-thick layer of fondant, which will add too much sweetness.

The yellow and red macarons shells were filled with smoked salted caramel and dark chocolate ganache. I'm lucky that it was a nice and sunny day when I took these pics. The natural light streaming in really makes the colours pop. Usually the lighting in my photos isn't so good. (darned yellow lights!!)

The cupcakes were chocolate and red velvet, frosted with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. I added dark chocolate crunchy Callebaut pearls to the chocolate cupcakes, and mini m&m's on top of the red velvet cupcakes. Still putting the cupcake carrier that my mom got me a while back to good use :)

The top tier of the birthday cake was strawberry cake with strawberry Swiss meringue buttercream filling. The bottom tier was Devil's food cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. I loved making the Toodles-inspired cake topper.

All our cakes and bakes went on a Mickey Mouse-themed dessert table, styled by One and Only Gallery. My favourite item were these cute Mickey shorts cake pops! I actually made these the first time around last year for a giveaway! They're chocolate cake pops, dipped in white chocolate dyed red, decorated with yellow chocolate "buttons" that were painted on with a toothpick!
