Avengers Cake

This cake was a surprise for a little warrior, celebrating his 7th birthday. He and his family have been through a lot and I was happy to bring a little joy to him on his special day with this cake.

Avengers Cake!

The cake is three layers of Devil's food cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. Since it was an Avengers-themed birthday, I decided to divide the cake into four quadrants, decorating each one for a different Avenger team member. Covering the four sections of the cake in four different colours is actually more challenging than just covering the cake in a single colour, because the fondant has to be cut in the right amount, without excess, so that there is no messy overlap into the next quadrant. A sharp knife is definitely essential!
Captain America's section

The "front" of the cake, naturally, was Captain America, as he is the current leader of the Avengers team. The shield was made by cutting red and white concentric circles, with a smaller blue circle for the centre, finished off with a white star. In order to ensure an even width for the red and white stripes on the side of the cake, I used a ribbon cutter to cut the fondant into strips, and then trimmed down to the right length.

Thor's cape & hammer

Thor's side of the cake was draped with red fondant, styling it like his cape, with a couple of the special grey "disks" that make up his armour. Thor's mighty hammer, Mjölnir, went on top.

Grumpy Iron Man

Iron Man's quadrant was covered in yellow fondant, with a random flame pattern at the bottom and topped off with a 2D fondant cut out of iron man's helmet. Do you like how grumpy he looks?

Hulk Smash!

Thor's section of the cake was the most fun to make, party because I kept hearing the Hulk snarling "No one messes with the Hulk!" in my head when I was sculpting his fist out of fondant (my kids have the talking action figure...). The secret to making the "pop out" section is to place a small circle of baking paper on the buttercream (on the spot that you want to pop out) before you cover it with fondant. After covering the section in fondant, using a sharp knife, make three slits through the fondant (for 6 wedges), on the area that's covering the baking paper. Make the slits just long enough so that the fondant fist that you've made fits snugly inside. Carefully peel back the wedges of fondant, exposing the baking paper underneath. Gently pull out the baking paper. Cut 6 triangles of black fondant, the same size as the 6 wedges, and stick it to the top side of the wedges with a little bit of water. If you like, you can also cut a small circle of black fondant and cover the exposed buttercream in the hole. But you don't have to cuz anyway, it will be covered with Hulk's fist.

"Hawkeye" view of the cake

To make the bricks on the side of Hulk's section, I thinly rolled out some grey fondant, and then pressed a brick pattern onto it using a brick embosser. I cut out the middle section of the bricks and placed them so it looks like they've been demolished by the Hulk's mighty smash.

Avengers, assemble!

Many thanks to All Mommy Wants for contacting me with the opportunity to contribute this cake for this special surprise celebration. So happy to see the smiles on the birthday boy and his family. Happy 7th birthday, Jefferson!
