pink, black & white desserts for a 21st birthday |
chocolate cupcakes, frosted ombré-style |
red velvet cupcakes, with rose swirl frosting |
There were two kinds of cupcakes: chocolate cupcakes, frosted with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream, dyed four shades of pink & sprinkled with chocolate rice and white nonpareils, and red velvet cupcakes, frosted with a swirl of cream cheese Swiss meringue buttercream and topped with a fancy 3D fondant topper.
glam nail polish fondant cupcake toppers |
The 3D fondant toppers were made to look like nail polish, on a pink and white polka dot background. Some of the toppers also had pretty pink dresses on them, hand-sculpted cuz I don't have a dress mould! I glammed both the nail polish and the dresses up by adding some shimmery pink disco dust, to give them that extra posh sparkle!
The cake pops were made of chocolate cake, swirled with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream, dipped in dark chocolate dyed black with powdered food colouring, and rolled in glittering black sanding sugar. It's a good thing I have an ample stock of black sanding sugar after making these other cake balls! To embellish the cake pops, I moulded some fancy pink fondant roses and stuck them on the using a little bit of melted chocolate.
The other cake pops were dipped in strawberry pink chocolate, and decorated with a small white fondant rose.
The sugar cookies were shaped like keys, decorated in two shades of pink fondant and outlined with black royal icing. Keys symbolise coming of age, which is the perfect thing to have at a party for someone who's entering adulthood on their 21st birthday.
The Oreos were covered in both white chocolate and dark chocolate dyed black, then decorated with a hot pink drizzle and a a fondant heart cut out.
There were also four flavours of macarons, with the shells for each flavour being dyed different shades of pink: lime curd, strawberry, dark chocolate ganache and lemon meringue.
And finally, there were marshmallow pops, which are regular white marshmallows, stuck on stripey straws, dipped very very briefly in water and rolled in hot pink sanding sugar.
All of these fancy desserts went on a classy black, white and pink dessert table, styled by the fabulous Sugarena. I joked that all the black and white stripes reminded me of Beetlejuice (from the '80s cartoon!), but the table still turned out great and perfectly suited the theme.
It was a brilliant idea to use a large rectangular picture frame, holding a poster designed with stripes and the birthday celebrant's name, to display the ombré macarons. And, unlike most dessert tables, this one didn't have a backdrop, so the helium balloons were put to good use to break up the monotony of the unfortunately ugly brown curtains (which came with the chalet) behind the table.
I had a stroke of genius as well. See the black and white cake pop stand? Well, I couldn't find striped wrapping paper, so I wrapped the DIY cake pop stand in plain black poster paper and achieved the striped effect by simply gluing on strips of white letter paper!
I love the overall fancy-vintage look of the table, with just the right amount of hot pink to add splashes of colour to an otherwise black and white set up. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your adult life, birthday lady Nikko! Happy 21st birthday!
