Minion Cupcakes

So, that 3D minion cake was for the birthday boy's school celebration.  Going with the same theme, I got to make a couple dozen minion cupcakes for his birthday celebration with his family!

Half the cupcakes were chocolate cupcakes, frosted with a swirl of dark chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream. The other dozen were lemon cupcakes, frosted with a swirl of lemon Swiss meringue buttercream. It's good to have two contrasting flavours, to appeal to both the kids and adults at the party.

To top the cupcakes, I made 2D fondant minion faces. It was really fun creating different expressions for each face! No two are exactly alike! I used a few different sized piping tips and nozzles to cut out the eyes and goggles. I added a dot of white food colouring on the eyes, using a toothpick, which really brings the minions to life.

Now, I'm no hairstylist. I wear my hair down, or up in a ponytail. Maybe you'll see me braid my kids' hair every so often. That's about as creative as I get when it comes to styling hair.  But for these minions, I went wild! Some had "Homer Simpson" hair. Some had rockstar mohawks. Others had a curly Q for hair, and one even had a comb-over! Yep, too much fun.

and a happy birthday message

Since the party was still a few hours away, I advised the birthday boy's mummy to put the fondant toppers on at the party, instead of having to store the cupcakes in aircon with the toppers already on. As we know, fondant is a finicky thing, especially in tropical, humid weather. It has to be kept in an airtight container, or in an air-conditioned room, or all that hard-work will end up drooping and melting on you. So, I packed the toppers and cupcakes separately.

The birthday boy's mummy did a great job arranging the cupcakes at the party venue. Here's the cheeky birthday boy, giving two thumbs up for his minions! Happy 6th Birthday, Kai Jie!
