Baby TV Cake

My youngest daughter absolutely loves babyTV. Her fave cartoons are Billy & Bam-Bam, Charlie & the Numbers and Hungry Henry! She's only 19 months old but she has pretty much memorized the order of the programs! I love how there's a channel dedicated to all baby shows. I can't take much credit for teaching my daughter shapes and colours or even how to count! That's all BabyTV, man!

BabyTV jungle cake

Anyway, I got to make this BabyTV cake for another BabyTV fan, a little dude celebrating his first birthday! The celebration was "jungle"-themed, but for the cake, instead of just having jungle animals like a lion or tiger on it, the birthday boy's mummy made sure to have his favourite BabyTV characters on the cake: Hungry Henry and the BabyTV giraffe & elephant.

The cake is the ever popular Devil's food cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. The cake is smaller than my regular 2-tiered cakes, being 5" & 7" rounds, but it was more than enough to feed the guests at the celebration.

To decorate the cake, I covered top tier in light blue fondant and the bottom tier in chocolate fondant. The front part of the cake is suppose to be a waterfall. I made indentations in the fondant to give it the "feel" of water, but I didn't really get the result that I had pictured! Maybe next time I will use blue piping gel. And just for fun, I added two small white birds swimming in the water.

jungley leaves and flowers

To accent the cake and give it a "jungley" feel, I cut out leaves, using a leaf-plunger cutter, and then I scored the edges to turn them into jungle leaves. I used an impression roller to create texture on the fondant-covered cake board, as well as on the leaves that birthday boy's name is on. I added some red and yellow flowers all around to give the cake a pop of colour.

I also added a few palm trees and a jungly number one. And about those palm trees...I didn't think about how heavy they would turn out! It was a little challenging standing them up on the cake because I chose to use a wire to hold them up on the cake instead of a BBQ stick! The trees just kept moving! But eventually I found a position in which they rested against each other for support.

The most fun thing about this cake was hand-sculpting the babyTV characters! The iconic babyTV giraffe with his rectangular head and orange-brown & red spots, the babyTV elephant with black floppy ears and red toe-nails, and of course, my daughter's fave, Hungry Henry!

"Who's hungry?"

"Henry is hungry!"

Hungry Henry

Hungry Henry is a Mexican cat who always ends up having to find the ingredients for the food he wants to eat because the chef never has them in stock! I loved making Henry's big sombrero and drawing the pattern on his bandana using an edible ink marker. His moustache gave me a little trouble cuz the left side kept falling off! But he turned out great! My daughter kept pointing to him and going "Hen-nee! Hen-nee!" hahah. Good, she can recognise him!

view from the top!

I hope big boy Harold had a lovely celebration with his family and friends! Happy 1st birthday, Harold!
