Winnie the Pooh Macarons, Cupcakes & Cake Pops

Winnie the Pooh is always a nice theme for a 1st birthday party. Nice bright colours and happy characters. So for baby boy Matthias' birthday celebration, I got to make Winnie the Pooh-themed macarons, cupcakes and cake pops.

Winnie the Pooh & pals macarons

So, this is the fourth time I've gotten to make Pooh & pals macarons. They did turn a lot better this time than my first few times, but there is still some room for improvement. I think I need to further experiment with the drying time of the different "layers" to get a crack-free character macaron! The macarons are filled with dark chocolate ganache, smoked salted caramel and lemon curd with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. I made a few regular round macarons as well, in the same colours as Pooh & his pals.

There were two dozen cupcakes as well, with half being red velvet frosted with cream cheese flavoured Swiss meringue buttercream, and the other half being vanilla cupcakes frosted with vanilla bean crème Mousseline. I had problems piping out the crème Mousseline frosting. I'm guessing because it's made of a custard base using egg yolks, so it's less able to hold it's shape compared with Swiss meringue buttercream, which is made with egg whites. But the rich, smooth, vanilla bean crème Mousseline goes perfectly with the vanilla cupcakes. The cupcakes are simple decorated with confetti sprinkles, in Winnie the Pooh colours, of course.

The cake pops are red velvet cake, crumbled and swirled with cream cheese flavoured Swiss meringue buttercream and dipped in white chocolate. I dyed the chocolate pastel cololurs of yellow, pink, blue and orange to match the dessert table's colour scheme. I managed to find matching wrapping paper to wrap my DIY cake pop stand in too!

The party was held outdoors on a super windy day, so it was an extra challenge making sure everything wouldn't get blown away! There were a couple of really nice Winnie the Pooh balloon air walkers and helium balloon bundles to go with the table, but the wind was just too strong to put the balloons near the food!
