Family Cake

A fellow mommy friend was celebrating her birthday, after just having had her second daughter a month ago. Her husband wanted to surprise her with something special, and it had to be my all time best selling devil's food cake! He shared that last year, when I wasn't in town to make her birthday cake, they were disappointed by the one they ordered from somewhere else! I am glad to be back in town to bake for their family this year.

Family Cake

So, the hubby's brief was something family themed, devil's food cake, and with the words "Super Mummy Dawn". I asked what the birthday gal's fave colour is and he said that she doesn't really have a favourite, though she does wear a lot of black and red. Lol.

Ok, since I had pretty much free reign (whoo! love it when my clients give me free reign), I decided to try the fault-line cake trend, but combine it with the marbled buttercream effect.

Super Mummy Dawn's bday cake

Using Mijji cakes' method for buttercream marbling, I combined black and red buttercream (the birthday girl's fave colours), slathered it onto the middle of a crumb coated cake, and then put it in the freezer for about 30 mins.

Then I took my metal bench scraper and went around a few turns to reveal the gorgeous black-red marbling!

the final reveal!

Then I applied white Swiss meringue buttercream along the bottom and top sides of the cake (avoiding the middle marbled section), and again went around with the bench scraper until I got the finish that I was looking for.

I got the buttercream "whiter" by adding just a smidge of purple gel food colouring to the buttercream, cuz naturally, it's tinged a little yellow because of the colour of the butter! I painted the "fault line" with Rolkem supers gold, mixed with a little vodka.

To top the cake, I wanted to surprise the birthday girl with sugar figurines of her family, including the newest addition of course.

The daddy shared with me that the older daughter preferred to stick to mommy so he was spending lots of time with the new baby. So I arranged the figurines such that mommy is holding the older gal, and daddy is holding the new baby!

Happy family of 4

I also made a couple of flowers to accent the side of the cake. Not sure what flowers they are cuz I pretty much just made them up. lol.

lets call them poppies?

I'm so happy that the birthday mummy and her family thoroughly enjoyed the cake! Happy Birthday, super Mummy Dawn!!

Happy Birthday, Super Mummy Dawn!
