Unicorn and Rainbow Steamed Blossoms

Whoo! We've been in town for a week now getting nicely settled in. The neighbours are really friendly and I've missed being in city where you're welcomed with smiles and hugs! It is a little different living here now than just coming home for a visit. Now we gotta figure out where to get everything, and that includes baking stuff of course.

Unicorn & Rainbow Blossoms

I only brought 1 suitcase full of baking tools with me and honestly, I feel a little handicapped not having everything at my disposal! My sister used to joke that I could whip up a 3-tier cake with the works at a moments' notice cuz my cupboards are always stocked with everything to make that happen (but that I couldn't make dinner on short notice cuz my fridge is always empty of stuff to make a simple meal. Hahaha)

whipping up those eggs!

So the morning of my birthday, I was itching to at least make some steamed cupcakes to bring to dinner with my friends later. To me, a birthday isn't really a birthday without having some form of cake with a candle to blow out!

Headed off to the nearest supermarket with my girls to stock up on the basics: flour, sugar, milk, eggs, Nutella. And then I realised that I needed food colouring! Supermarkets usually carry the liquid type of food colouring, which I hardly ever use for cakes. I needed gel food colouring (like Wilton or Americolour etc). But this was nowhere to be found. I checked the Dollarama too but no dice. The nearest Michaels was a 15-minute drive away and I didn't have the time. So I had to make do with the liquid food colouring. (Got the Neon set to make things interesting).

After making up the batter, I stared at the colours I had on hand, and decided that unicorns and rainbows were the best to do! So, that's what I ended up with. I made some random teenage mutant ninja turtles, swirls and hearts etc. with the leftover batter too.

So to celebrate my birthday, my BFFs, hubby and I went to a pub, caught Crazy Rich Asians and explored the Richmond Night Market! We had these unicorn and rainbows steamed blossoms for dessert after the pub! It's been yearssss since I've been back in my hometown to celebrate my birthday with my friends! and I'm so happy that I got to spend the evening with them, and happy that I got to blow out a candle and make a wish on my birthday :)
