Dîner en Blanc Grazing Platter

So yep, this post is completely un-cake or dessert related! My BFF invited me to be her date at the elegant and exclusive 7th annual Dîner en Blanc event, held at VanDusen Botanical Gardens this year! The location was kept secret and we literally only found out as the bus pulled up to the event grounds!

Cheese and Charcuterie Grazing Platters

Dîner en Blanc is a classy picnic, where attendees dress head to toe in white. Not off white. Not cream. Not eggshell. Bright White. People can come in a simple white dress or white suit, or go all out in a fancy white ballgown or even a wedding dress! And of course, all white accessories. Think fascinators and fedoras, top hats and even Las Vegas showgirl costumes, complete with white marabou feathers!  There are only 4000 tickets available, making tickets hard to come by, since they're allocated on a lottery basis.

Like a traditional picnic, you have to pack your own picnic basket of food to eat at the event. There is the option of pre-purchasing the food available there, but it is always more fun to pack your own food! And in addition to the food, you have to bring your own (white) table, (white) chairs and anything else (mainly white, touches of silver and gold are ok) that you want to decorate your table with!

My friend and I decided on a cheese and charcuterie, and salmon and greens for our mains. She also made a small and delicious lemon cake for dessert! I was excited to do up the cheese and charcuterie, cuz instead of a typical cheese board, I wanted to style a grazing platter, inspired by Australian "grazing" spreads!

Dîner en Blanc table styles

Making a grazing platter is really quick and easy if you have all the components on hand, and have done the chopping and washing of any fresh fruits and veggies that you want on the platter. The hard work is really just shopping for the right ingredients!

fancy picnic to dress up for!

For the cheese grazing platter, we had a selection of 6 different types of cheeses (including goat brie, manchengo, aged white cheddar and Roquefort blue), my homemade spinach dip, pomegranate-habanero jelly, fresh grapes and berries, a selection of nuts (walnuts, pecans, pistachios and hazelnuts), dried mulberries and strawberries, chopped veggies, green Castelvetrano olives, fancy gherkins and pickled onions.

The charcuterie platter had slices of parma ham, Sopresseta, hot genoa salami, hungarian salami, hot habanero pepperettes, parmesan cheese shavings and a selection of crackers and pretzel chips, garnished with grape tomatoes and basil.

too much for 2!

My friend and I had bigger eyes than stomachs when we were shopping for these platters, cuz as you can see, the grazing platters were way too big for 2 people to eat alone!! In fact, we didn't even get to our mains at the picnic!

pre-napkin wave, napkin wave!

I'm honoured that my cheese and charcuterie grazing platters IG post was featured on the Daily Hive feature of the Best Moments of Dîner en Blanc 2018!

Dîner en Blanc was really fun. Lots of very Instagrammable photo ops with all the other attendees dressed head to toe in white, plus the event organizers put up an art gallery showcasing local artists, roving performers and even a white mock-Eiffel Tower in the centre of the picnic grounds!

Dîner en Blanc was officially kicked-off with everyone doing the napkin wave, and culminated in all 4000 participants lighting up sparklers in the dark at 9pm! It was definitely an enjoyable experience, and worth lugging all the picnic food and equipment on the bus!! Hope to be able to attend this annual event again next time I'm in town!
