Hatchimals Cake

So it's my first time doing a Hatchimal cake. What is a Hatchimal, you might ask? Well, I had to do a bit of reading on my own to find out more. My girls haven't caught up to the craze yet, and it's already been a couple years since the toy was first released for Christmas 2016.

Hatchimals Cake

The cake was for a joint 7th birthday celebration for two young ladies! The brief I was given for this cake was: it must be eggless, and decorated with 2 Hatchimals, and have pink, purple and blue. Awesome. Love it when the client trusts me and leaves everything else up to me!

So since it had to be an eggless cake, I went with 4 layers of dark and delicious eggless chocolate cake. Super moist and super dark, since it uses oil instead of butter. For the filling, I paired whipped dark chocolate ganache with swirls of ooey gooey smoked salted caramel. Drooling yet?

In lieu of my staple Swiss meringue buttercream (which has lots of egg whites in it), I went for the standard American buttercream, made with powdered sugar and unsalted butter, flavoured with vanilla extract, and dyed light pink. I totally forgot how nice and firm this type of buttercream is, and how it forms a crust after sitting out for a bit. This helped me to get the surface super smooth!

speckled cake

I wanted the cake to look speckled, like the egg that the Hatchimals hatch out of. To get the speckled effect, I flicked on purple, pink and blue Edible Art Paint, using a small paintbrush and my finger. (I had a blue fingertip for daysss). I cut the birthday girls' names out of white fondant using letter cutters, stuck those onto black fondant, and then coloured the edges with blue and purple edible ink markers, mimicking the Hatchimals logo.

I included a purple heart in the middle of the cake, much like on a real Hatchimal egg, but added a number 7 on it so that it doesn't look like a Valentine's Day cake or something.

To top the cake, i sculpted 2 Hatchimals out of a mixture of gumpaste and fondant. I Googled a few images and found some that were in the right colour scheme, and thats how we ended up with this pink furry Hatchimal, and this other purple Hatchimal with antennas.

I used a no. 233 grass piping nozzle to add texture on the fondant and make the Hatchimals look fluffy. I made the purple guy sitting in his egg to make things more interesting. Don't even ask me for their names cuz I have no idea.

DIY glitter candles

And since it would be ridiculous to have a total of 14 candles on the cake, I decided to include number candles with the cake. The number candles that you typically get from the dollar store are generic colours and don't really match well with the theme. So I glammed them up with some pink and purple glitter. Don't they look so much better?

The girls were literally screaming with excitement when I delivered the cake to the party! One of them called dibs on the pink Hatchimal right away, and the other was happy to take the purple guy. Phew! Happy Birthday, Sloka & Maya!

Happy 7th birthday, ladies!

positive client feedback!
