Mario Macaron Tower Cake

I love how Super Mario is making a come back. Back in the '90s, the original Nintendo was all the rage. Fast forward to Super NES, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Wii and now, Nintendo Switch! Just wait 'til they bring back Super Contra. No, no, this is not a post about Nintendo, though you could count how many times I've used the word in this paragraph. Haha.

Super Mario Cake

Anyway, this cake was a surprise birthday for a birthday lady who absolutely loves Super Mario! Who says video games are just for boys? I, myself, am an avid player. And Super Mario is one of the reasons my mom insists that I ended up with such bad eyesight (raising my hand here for 12-diopter perscription lenses). I like to blame bad genes, since everyone in my family wears glasses!

It's a Mario's overalls!

The actual cake part is the ever popular devil's food cake with whipped dark chocolate ganache, frosted in gloriously red buttercream. Don't say I never warned you, but such brightly coloured buttercream is definitely mouth-staining! The cake was decorated to look like Mario's overalls, with black fondant strips, yellow buttons and a hand-cut Mario font M. I also made Happy Birthday plaques for the tower, cut out of fondant in the same Mario font. It really helps to have a super sharp Xacto knife to cut the details out with!

Mario font "M"

The crowning glory of this cake, though, is Milleaville's super awesome Super Mario-themed macaron tower! There's Mario, Luigi Toad and Princess Peach, topped off with a 10cm tall full-body Super Mario macaron! The details are just perfect. The macarons are filled with delicious mint chocolate and milk chocolate ganache. I used thick royal icing to attach the Happy Birthday plaques onto the front of the tower.

Very happy to hear that the birthday lady was, indeed, very surprised and Super ecstatic to have this Super Mario macron tower cake for her birthday! Happy Birthday, Joyce!

Happy Birthday, Joyce!
