Cars Cake, round 2

For Kai En's birthday celebration at school, I got to make him another Cars cake, but this time it was a massive 10" cake to feed all his friends and teachers!

Cars cake

The cake was 4 layers of red velvet cake, with lemon cream cheese Swiss meringue buttercream filling. The frosting on the outside was vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream, which I had to tint white with Chefmaster liquid whitener cuz the butter here is yellowish and makes the buttercream off-white.

all those black fondant squares

You know those times when you're madly searching for something that you need but no matter how hard you look, you can't find it? Well this was one of those times, when I was desperately looking for my square cutter, which I had bought earlier this year for a Minecraft cake but ended up not even opening it up from the original packaging. I wanted to make my life easier and use the cutter to make black squares for the checkered flag wrapping around the cake.

Well, let's just say I was pretty frustrated after half an hour of digging through my supply cupboard and coming up empty. I had to cut all the squares out one by one, with a sharp knife. The black squares were placed on the cold and hard buttercream-covered cake straight from the fridge, in an air-conditioned room. I really can't stress how important it is to work in an air-conditioned room when you're working with fondant in the hot and humid tropics. Working in room temperature will just make your life difficult and you'll prob end up with tons of condensation and a sticky mess.

McQueen on the biscuit sand dessert road

The front of the cake was decorated with a hand-cut fondant Cars logo, with the birthday boy's name on it. To top the cake, I made a fondant strip of road, and sprinkled crushed digestive biscuits on either side, accenting with fondant rocks and a couple of standing cacti.

"Speed, I am speed."

Green buttercream grass was piped around the cake, using Wilton piping tip number 233, with a few bunches of grass going on top of the cake too.

Happy 3rd Birthday, Kai En!

The birthday boy's mummy will be placing some Cars toys on top, but I managed to find a small Lighting McQueen in my kids' toy box for photo purposes. Love how this cake turned out! "Speed, I am Speed." VROOOOM! Happy 3rd Birthday again, Kai En!
