Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Dessert Table

Now here's a sweet theme that I haven't done in a while: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star! Think soft pink pastels, combined with fluffy white clouds and a touch of gold glam. It is such sweet theme for a little girl's first birthday celebration. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to make these desserts for All Mommy Wants' grand Twinkle Star Dessert Table!

I got to make cookies, cake pops, cupcakes and the birthday cake for this celebration. These cookies may be my favourite so far, consisting of personalised stars, sleepy pink-dusted clouds and a crescent moon holding a pink glittery star.

For the stars, I let the pink flood layer dry completely before piping on the script "Charlotte" using 20-second consistency royal icing. Quite happy that my hand-writing turned out pretty decent and consistent! Once it was fully dry, I carefully hand-painted all the lettering, with my fave Rolkem Supers Gold dust, mixed with a little vodka.

For the clouds, I used my callout cookie cutter, cutting off the pointed bit so that it would just be a cloud shape. Once the white royal icing base was completely dry, I went in with a small duster brush and some pink pearl dust to soften up the edges and give it a sweet pink tint. I drew on the eyes and mouth with a fine-tipped black edible ink marker, and attached pink sugar pearls for the cheeks and added a gold star sprinkle accent.

For the crescent moon, the circle base was filled in with cream-coloured royal icing and allowed to set, and then the crescent moon was piped on one side with white royal icing. The stars were cut out of pink fondant, and then brushed with a little bit of water and sprinkled with Rolkem baby pink crystals to make them all glittery. Once the icing on the moon cookies had dried completely, I drew on the string with a fine-tipped black edible ink marker, and attached the pink glitter star on using a dot of royal icing.  The crescent moon was painted with edible gold dust and the eyes and mouth were drawn on once the gold layer had dried.

The cake pops were red velvet cake, crumbled and swirled with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. To form them into stars, I evenly packed the cake pop dough in a star-shaped cookie cutter and carefully pushed them out.

I froze them solid before putting them on lollipop sticks and then coating them in melted white chocolate.

Gold star cake pops

Once the chocolate coating had set, the cake pops were brushed with gold dust mixed with vodka, to give them a really shiny gold finish. You can also just dry brush them with gold dust and a large duster brush for a softer gold look if you prefer, like these cake pops.

The cupcakes were strawberry and vanilla bean cupcakes, frosting with a fluffy swirl of vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream using a large round piping nozzle. I actually had to colour the buttercream with Chefmaster liquid whitener in order to get it "white", cuz buttercream is naturally off-white/light yellow, thanks to the yellowness of the butter. I failed miserably at piping "Cloud frosting" (this video tutorial makes it look so easy, but let me tell you that it ain't easy, and it uses an obscene amount of frosting) so I settled on a simple fluffy buttercream swirl.

I also got to make the royal icing golden moons with glitter pink stars that went on top of Milleaville Macarons' gorgeous pink macarons stacks! I printed out a moon and star template (drawn using Powerpoint!) on a piece of paper, placed a piece of acetate paper on top and traced out the star shapes first using light pink royal icing, sprinkling the stars with pink glitter before they dried.

making glittery pink stars & gold moon

Once the stars were dry, I brushed off all the excess glitter, popped off all the stars, and then went back in and piped all the moon shapes with white royal icing, and then placed the glitter stars back on the tips of the moons before they dried. When the moons were dry, I brushed both sides with gold dust. Love how they look on top of the macaron stacks!

Now for the birthday cake: the top tier was a boozy rum and raisin cake and the bottom tier was the ever popular devil's food cake with whipped dark chocolate ganache. I'm not kidding when I say boozy for the rum and raisin. I used a full cup of rum to soak the raisins, to brush on top of each of the three cake layers and in the rum Swiss meringue buttercream frosting! I had a slice of some of the extra cake and boy did it pack a punch!

happy hour up in here.

The cake was cleanly finished in soft pink buttercream, and decorated with fluffy buttercream clouds, gold fondant star cutouts and finished with a wavy name plaque in the middle.

All these lovely desserts and birthday cake went on this gorgeous Twinkle Twinkle Little Star-themed dessert table, styled by the talented All Mommy Wants! It was such a grand set up, with full curtain backdrop fitted with soft twinkling lights, and cascading balloons on the side. The luscious mini blueberry tarts were by Sugarena. The cute pink star-topped jelly cups were done by Jelly Agar and the fancy macaron stacks were by Milleaville Macarons.

This sweet set up is clean and balanced, with just the right amount of negative space. I love the cute little props like the fluffy plush cloud, sleepy owl basket and those fancy gold-rimmed hexagonal display cases! It's all these little details that make for an impressive dessert table! I just love how everything came together. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Do you know how loved you are?

Happy 1st Birthday, little baby Charlotte!*
