My Sweet Piano Cake & Desserts

I learned, when I delivered the cake & desserts, that the birthday girl's mummy chose the Sanrio character My Sweet Piano as the theme for the celebration, because her daughter was born in the year of the sheep (according to the Chinese lunar calendar). She didn't want to go for a straight-forward sheep theme. I didn't realise until then that Piano is a lamb! Hahah. (I think more people are familiar with My Sweet Piano's best friend, My Melody. I really don't know why they names are so "musical".)

I got to make the birthday cake, cupcakes, cake pops, cookies and macarons for the dessert table. The top tier of the cake was vanilla butter cake, with layers of vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. The bottom tier was a light chocolate sponge cake, filled with chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream.

I took inspiration from the party backdrop for the design of the cake. I always do a quick sketch when I'm planning the design out. (My drawing skills aren't the greatest!) Think the actual cake came out pretty close. Hahah.

Let me just say that Piano isn't the easiest character to sculpt out of fondant. I had intended to make Piano look fluffy, in the same was as I make 3D fluffy clouds. So I rolled little balls of fondant, stuck them together, and then covered them with a thinly rolled layer of pink fondant. It actually took quite some time to do this.

Sadly, the result wasn't what I had envisioned. My Sweet Piano looks like she's just been to the gym! Beefcake!! lol. I guess she is still kind of "cute" (if you squint and cross your eyes a little!)

super buff My Sweet Piano!

Anyway, moving swiftly along, I made 2D fondant cutouts of all 4 of the other Woodlands animals which are on the party backdrop. Making cutouts isn't as challenging as making figurines, but it is a time-consuming and meticulous process, carefully cutting out each detail in the right colour of fondant using a sharp blade and then layering them together just right. I do love how all these little creatures came out, especially the bear!

and even a racoon!

The other details on the cake were in different shades of green, with some trees and flowers, mushrooms, and acorns to tie everything in to the Woodlands theme. It turned out pretty well, and it definitely has a sweet, girly feel to it.

The cake and desserts were part of this lovely My Sweet Piano in the Woods-themed dessert table, styled by One and Only Gallery. The wooden cake stands, props and cutouts were so appropriate for the theme, and really helped to tie everything together.

The cake pops were strawberry cake, swirled with strawberry Swiss meringue buttercream, dipped in green and red dyed white chocolate, and accented with royal icing mushrooms and fondant daisy flowers. The cute Piano paper toppers were done by One and Only Gallery.

The sugar cookies were decorated with a sky blue and light grass green fondant background, with a My Piano face cutout. When decorating cookies with fondant, I always make sure to roll the fondant extra thin, cuz nobody wants to eat a thick layer of too-sweet fondant!

The cupcakes were vanilla and red velvet cupcakes, frosted with swirls of vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream, piped on using a 1M nozzle. I made it a bit more interesting by layering the green and blue buttercream for the grass and sky, as with the cookies and the background.

The pink and green macarons were filled with dark chocolate ganache and smoked salted caramel. The slice of wood that they were displayed on is just perfect plate for the theme!

Here's a shot of all the animals on the party backdrop, and on the matching cake! Super buff Piano makes me laugh every time. Still, I love the overall set up, and am so glad that everything was well-received! Happy 1st Birthday, baby Laurel!
