Minion Cake Pops

It's been a long time since the release of the first Minions movie, and surprisingly, aside from this minion cake, cupcakes & cookies, I haven't had the opportunity to make many Minion desserts! So, when I was asked to make minion cake pops (for someone celebrating their 42nd birthday!!), I got all excited!

minion cake pops!

Since it was a pretty busy week for me and I had taken these cake pops in as a last minute bake, I told the guy that I'd be making just the yellow minion heads, with simple faces, something like these, which he was totally cool with.

But as usual, I just couldn't help myself, and had to add in all the other details, after having read Bakerella's tutorial a few years back. So first up, shape the cake pops. After weighing out the cake pop dough and rolling them into balls, I just elongated the middles to make sausage shapes for the minions' bodies. There was a request for Bob the minion to be larger than all the other minions, so I made him twice as heavy as the rest. Head on over to my cake pops basics page to see how to make the cake pop dough and for other tips.

Before starting the dipping process, it is best to prepare all the fondant details that will be added onto the minions, like their googles, eyes, hands and feet. Of course, I am saying this after NOT having prepared them in advance during the making of these cake pops, and having to scramble to roll tiny hands and jam black jimmies in their heads before the chocolate coating set.  ;P

Hello there, Bob!

Anyway, I dipped all the cake pops in white chocolate dyed yellow, using yellow Wilton candy oil. Before the chocolate coating fully set, I quickly attached black jimmies for the hair. Luckily I found some Halloween-themed sprinkles in my stash that had the black jimmies in the mix! After the chocolate had set, I gently twisted the cake pops off the stick, dipped the bottom quarter into dark blue chocolate, and then re-inserted the sticks. I stuck on tiny black fondant balls for their feet, before the dark blue chocolate had fully hardened.

Once the blue chocolate coating had hardened, I used a toothpick to add more blue chocolate for their overalls, and some yellow chocolate for their arms. I added tinier balls of black fondant at the ends of their arms before the yellow chocolate had fully set.

can you spot Bob, Carl & Dave in the mix?

The goggles and eyes were cut out of white fondant, using a round plunger cutter. Their eye balls were cut out of brown fondant, using piping nozzle no. 12 for the one-eyed minions, and piping nozzle no. 8 for the rest. I brushed a little bit of water onto the eyeballs to stick them onto the goggles, and then put a small dab of yellow chocolate to attach the goggles to the cake pops. The silver rims on the goggles were made of silver lustre dust mixed with some vodka and painted on using a fine brush. The goggle straps were drawn on using a toothpick, with dark chocolate dyed black. To give the eyes some life, I added a dab of Americolor Bright White to each eye, using the point of the toothpick.

To finish the minions, I added a silver "G" on their overalls, and drew a little smile on their faces, using a fine black edible ink marker. They all look slightly different, and I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out!

Since these guys were being picked up a couple days in advance of the celebration, they would need to be stored in the fridge. To prevent condensation from forming on the cake pops and making them all sticky, I wrapped them in individual cellophane bags, tied off with a twist-tie. If you need to keep your cake pops in the fridge, I suggest the you wrap them individually, or place the whole lot in an airtight container or a ziplock back as well, and then when it's time to party, immediately after taking them out of the fridge, move them into a cool, dry, air-conditioned room for about 30 mins to come to temperature, before taking them out of the packaging. This will keep your cake pops looking their best.

that's a wrap, folks!

boxed up and ready to party

Happy 42nd Birthday!

P.S., It really is a small world, cuz when the guy came to pick up the minion cake pops, we got to chatting and discovered that we both used to work for the same company and had many mutual friends! In fact, he had gotten to know that I make cakes and stuff from one of his friends, whose financé is the younger sister of my coworker from my Deli days at Safeway, all the way on the other side of the world!! It's a small world after all!
