Dusty Planes Cake |
The cake is a layer of red velvet cake, sandwiched between two layers of Devil's food cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. Chocolate cake is always a crowd-pleaser, especially for celebrations at school!

The cake was decorated with sky blue buttercream, some fondant clouds, a hand-cut stylized name plaque, like the one on the Planes movie poster, and topped with a toy Dusty figurine. Toy toppers are nice because the birthday kid can keep it after the celebration and play with it for a long time, unlike fondant figurines.
I made two kinds of clouds for this cake: flat cloud cut-outs to go on the sides of the cake, and 3D fluffy clouds to go on top. The 3D clouds were made by rolling small balls fondant, sticking them together with a little bit of water, and then covering the balls with one larger piece of fondant, to create a "smooth", cute and fluffy cloud.
two kinds of happy clouds |
I must've had last year on the brain, because I totally only brought 3 candles with me when I delivered this cake to Ashton's school! Luckily, the school had a stash of extra candles and we swiped one for the celebration. Happy 4th Birthday, Ashton!
