Happy Windmill Farm Cake

I love making cakes with rainbows on top. I like to call them happy cakes, cuz they give me a happy feeling! This cake initially wasn't going to even have a rainbow on top. No, this cake was suppose to be about windmills. Many colourful, moveable windmills. See, the birthday boy loves windmills. Ok, technically I guess they're pinwheels, but let's call them windmills for simplicity's sake.

Happy Windmill Farm Cake

The birthday boy's mummy wanted lots of colourful, moving windmills on the cake. I couldn't figure out how to make that happen with fondant, so we settled on foil windmills! Lucky I happened to find them at a local party supply store, sold in a pack of 12 as cupcake toppers. Otherwise, the birthday boy's aunt was going to hand-make them out of paper!

Fondant Cow Figurine

The birthday boy is allergic to eggs, so this is an eggless chocolate cake, filled with dark chocolate ganache and chocolate American buttercream. The cake is suppose to be the sky and a field, with windmills all around and a horse and a cow lazing about. The clouds are hand-cut so no two are exactly the same. To get the texture on the cake board and the grass, I used a striped-textured rolling pin. I randomly triangles out for the grass and gently bent the edges back after attaching them on the cake to give it a more 3D effect.

Fondant Horse Figuirne

For the windmills on the top tier, I swapped out the shorter sticks that came with the windmills and used BBQ skewers instead cuz they're taller, so I could poke them into the bottom cake tier without them sinking too low. For the windmills on the bottom tier, I used a bit of royal icing on the back of each windmill and a little on the base to help hold them up.

Top cake tier with spinning pinwheels

I love how cute the fondant cow turned out. I love his little tail, and his nostrils! The horse was a bit trickier to make because it's standing. There are 4 toothpicks through each of his legs and one to hold up his head. The horse's hair is made up of a whole bunch of very thin black fondant snakes. These were fragile and several of them broke off after they dried. I tried not to move the horse too much. Both the horse and the cow are attached onto the cake board with some royal icing.

Rainbow topper with a happy Mr. Sun

The rainbow topper and sun were made in the same way as the rainbow toppers on these cakes. To finish the cake, I added the birthday boy's name on a cloud. I can imagine the birthday boy's happy smile when he blows out his candle and sees the windmills spin! I couldn't resist blowing on the cake a few times and making the windmills spin myself! They're so fun to watch, what with all the colours and everything. Wishing baby boy Joel a very happy 1st birthday!! Hope he got to eat a nice big slice of cake. ;)

Happy 1st Birthday, Joel!

The birthday boy's mummy sent me these pics* of Joel "blowing" out his birthday candle! He is too cute. Apparently he wanted to blow to make the windmills spin too! I'm amazed that he knows how to blow at one year old! Good training, mummy and daddy!

party set up*
