Daisy Duck Cake

This Daisy Duck cake is inspired by the birthday girl's fashion-forward pink, grey and leopard print Daisy Duck dress! I can't believe she is already five years old. I still remember making her Minnie Mouse birthday cake for her 3rd birthday back when we were still living in Germany!

Daisy Duck Dress

Both cake tiers are Devil's Food cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache and chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream. The bottom tier is frosted using vanilla crusting buttercream. I used piping tip no. 104 to make the ruffles, in alternating rows of pink and grey. I love the pink and grey colour combo!

The top tier of the cake is covered in fondant. Initially I was going to make the ribbon that borders the cake in leopard print and just leave the top of the cake grey, but I thought it would look cooler if there was more leopard print on the cake! My friend pointed out that it looks like Daisy is standing on leopard print carpet. Haa. I painted the leopard print on with a paintbrush, using some black powdered food colouring dissolved in a little bit of vodka.

To top the cake, I made Daisy Duck out of fondant. I couldn't resist having her hold a tiny little cupcake with an even tinier cherry on top! The cherry even has an itty bitty little stem! I also made a fancy fondant number 5 to go on top of the cake as well. I just rolled a long snake out of pink fondant, thinned the ends out and then shaped it into a number 5. There is a very thin wire running through the 5 to support it's weight and to hold it up on the cake. At first I ran a BBQ stick through it, but it was too thick and distorted the shape, so I had to re-do it.

I love how this cake turned out. The pink and grey colours, together with the ruffles and leopard print make it a unique cake, indeed. And it matches very well with the birthday girl's dress!

Kailing had her birthday celebration at school with her classmates. I just love her smile in the pic below when she's cutting the cake! Kailing's mummy sent me a pic too, of the clean cake plate, with the kids lining up for seconds!! That's what I like to see - a completely devoured cake! I'm so glad Kailing and her friends enjoyed her birthday cake! Happy 5th Birthday, big girl Kailing!!

Make a wish!*
