Minnie Mouse Cake with a surprise inside!

I had been excitedly waiting for weeks to do this Minnie Mouse cake. Not only was it gonna be a 3D Minnie Mouse, but it would also have a surprise inside! The party theme was red, black, white, and of course the cake had to match with these colours...inside and out!

3D Minnie Mouse Cake

First, the cake. For the "red" part, I originally wanted to do a red velvet cake but the cake didn't come out a bright red colour. It was more a brownish-red because of the cocoa in the cake. So instead, I used vanilla cake dyed red. I'm loving SugarFlair's Super Red concentrated food colouring. A little goes a long way! The "black" part was Devil's Food Chocolate Cake. This cake pretty dark brown to begin with, so it didn't take much black food colouring to  make it a true black.

This cake is a double-baked surprise inside cake instead of the reverse-carving method that was used for this rainbow heart surprise inside cake. The red vanilla cake was first baked in a sheet pan. Then, many many Minnie Mouse heads were cut out of this cake using a cookie cutter, and then these pieces were arranged in a circle in another cake tin.

The black Devil's Food cake batter was poured on  top and then the whole thing was baked a second time in the oven. The vanilla cake recipe I used had oil instead of butter in it, ensuring that it wouldn't dry out during the 2nd bake. I just had to take a peek before frosting the cake to make sure the design came out right! Ta-da! Surprise Minnie Mouse head inside!!

To make things extra tasty, the cake was topped with a layer of dark chocolate ganache and then crumb coated with vanilla French buttercream. The cake was decorated in vanilla buttercream using a star piping tip. It's been a long time since I've decorated a cake using this method, so it was a good workout for my hand and wrist!

And now, for the 3D Minnie Mouse sitting on top of the cake! Minnie was made entirely out of cereal treats since the cake was already big enough to feed all the guests. Cereal treats are very easy to make. Melt some butter and marshmallows, then stir in puffed rice cereal and boom, you've got cereal treats! But you've got to work quickly to squish the stuff into the shape you want because it gets hard pretty quick as the mixture cools down.

After some more star-piping with vanilla buttercream and adding on the fondant details, our 3D Minnie Mouse cake is complete! She's all ready for the party, except her bow, which would be put on at the venue. I'm loving her little tail!

This Minnie Mouse cake was for a very lucky little girl's 1st birthday bash! Her mom went all out for the party, with party styling & a fantastic sweet table done up by Sugarena, Minnie Mouse balloon walkers, a DJ spinning Mickey Mouse Clubhouse tunes and even strobe lights!! So cool!

Happy 1st Birthday, Jovita Jayne!
