Mr. Chow Tennis Cake

My friend’s sister’s boyfriend was celebrating his 30th birthday.  His name is Mr. Chou, but his girlfriend affectionately calls him “Mr. Chow”, like the character in the movie The Hangover. You know, the crazy drug dealing, law breaking, trouble-making obnoxious little Asian guy with a funny accent. No, no, don’t get the wrong idea. Mr. Chou is not like Mr. Chow! It’s just funny to mis-pronounce his name. Mr. Chou’s girlfriend had a Mr. Chow bobble head to put on the cake too. Perfect!

Anyway, Mr. Chou is an avid tennis player as well.  So I had to think of how I could combine Mr. Chow and tennis… took me a while, but here’s what I came up with:

The top tier is classic Mr. Chow leopard print. On the bottom tier, front and centre, is the trunk of the car that Mr. Chow leapt out naked from in The Hangover. It was the first scene in the movie that his character appears in.  If you peek in the trunk, there are a couple of crowbars and some tennis balls. And of course, beside the car, there are some beer bottles and Mr. Chow’s sunglasses. The license plate on the car says “30” on it for the birthday boy’s age.

Now to tie in tennis, the rest of the bottom tier has tennis balls “bouncing” around the cake. The action lines were drawn on the fondant using a black edible food marker.

To complete the look, I wanted to write “Happy Birthday Mr. Chou” somewhere. I decided to make a “Mr. Chou” sign to look like Vegas lights. I printed out a “Happy Birthday” sign and taped it over the “Mr. Chow” writing on the base of the bobble head.

Happy 30th Birthday, Mr. Chou!!
