George Pig Cake and Cake Pops

Don’t you just hate it when you get a song stuck in your head? I had the Peppa Pig theme song stuck in my head the entire time I was making this cake. And the next two days after that as well.  And just the first 17 notes…The tune is just catchy!

Anyway, birthday boy Ethan wanted Peppa Pig’s brother, George Pig, as his birthday cake! It was for his birthday celebration at school with his classmates, so to go with the cake, there were George Pig cake pop giveaways as well. So generous!

First, the cake. The cake is a Devil's Food Cake, filled with dark chocolate ganache and chocolate French buttercream. Since Ethan is allergic to cow's milk, I used Organic Oat Milk in cake batter, and non-dairy whipping cream to make the dark chocolate ganache filling.

I started with the cake board first. It's my first time actually making a "scene" out of the cake board. It's a lot of work rolling and cutting! But I think it came out pretty well.

I cut the cake out in the shape of George Pig and then dirty iced him by covering it in a layer of chocolate French buttercream so that the fondant has a nice smooth surface to stick to.

Unfortunately, I sort of mis-estimated the size of the cake board required to fit all of George Pig on, and his left foot ended up sticking outside the confines of the cake board! Oops.

And now for the cake pops. I used the same Devil's Food Cake for the cake pops, crumbled, swirled with some of the dark chocolate ganache then rolled them into balls. Do check out my cake pops basics page for detailed steps.

In order to get George Pig's snout, I stuck on marshmallows with a bit of melted candy melt. For some reason, the pink candy melts I bought were flavoured with strawberry.... Just missing something vanilla to get all the Neopolitan flavours eh? A

Anyway, George Pig's ears are made of pumpkin seeds, his rosy cheeks and eyes are confetti sprinkles (with a dot of black edible food marker for his eyes). His nostrils and mouth were painted on with a toothpick using melted white chocolate dyed red. (I used candy oil to dye the chocolate. You can use powdered food colouring or candy oil. Please do NOT use gel or regular food colouring. These are water-based and will cause your chocolate to seize up and become unusable!)

Originally I was going to draw his nostrils and mouth on with edible food marker, but for some reason, my marker wouldn't write on the candy! I've read online that the Wilton brand (the one I have) isn't so good when it comes to writing on candy melts. Americolour ones are better, but I haven't been able to find them here.

George Pig's cousin

Since Ethan can't have white chocolate due to his milk allergy, I made him a special cake pop dipped in dark chocolate and rolled in pink sanding sugar instead. Let's call it George Pig's cousin.

After letting the cake pops dry, it was time to package them up in cellophane and tie them off with customized Thank You notes. I printed the tags on photo paper. Holds up much better than regular paper.

I hope Ethan had a great birthday party at school! "Peppa Pig. Peppa Pig! do do do do do do do do do do do..." Ack, that song again!!!
