Mr. Men & Little Miss fondant cut-outs |
I made all the characters ahead of time. I wanted to give them ample time to fully dry hard so that they wouldn't start drooping on the cake! Every single character was hand-cut from fondant, with the fondant rolled out a little thicker so that they wouldn't be brittle. It was a little challenging dyeing the fondant the correct colour, especially for the lime green of Little Miss Splendid, the shades of blue for Mr. Tall & Little Miss Shy, and the fuchsia for Little Miss Helpful!

I think my favourite character is Little Miss Splendid, because of her sassy hat, and also Mr. Tall, because of his super long legs! I thought it was cute that he was sitting down on the cake. Oh, yes, Mr. Tall's legs were bent into sitting position and allowed to dry on top of an upside-down cake pan. Don't forget to do this while the fondant is still nice and pliable, or else his legs will crack when you try to bend them!

Both cake tiers are the ever-popular Devil's Food Cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. So yummy and so chocolatey. And to add even more chocolatey flavour, the cake was covered in dark chocolate fondant! Mmm...Tootsie rolls. I actually mixed store-brand dark chocolate fondant with my new favourite fondant to work with - Massa Ticino tropic, to get a lighter shade of brown.
My only complaint with Massa Ticino Tropic is that it's so elastic that if any additional deco is placed on the sides of the cake when it has just been freshly covered with fondant, the weight tends to pull the fondant down and cause it to wrinkle!! So, I made sure to only stick the characters on the cake using some royal icing, after the dark chocolate fondant had dried for a good 4 hours.

I also only added the grass border afterwards for the same reason. The grass was made by rolling out a long strip of green fondant, then adding the vertical line pattern using an impression roller. Then I cut triangles out to make the blades of grass. I used a small rolling pin to help roll up this long strip of grass, and then unravelled the strip on the bottom of each tier, using a little bit of water to stick it onto the cake.
The final fondant details that went on the cake were the birthday girl's name, and the daisy flowers, cut out in three sizes using plunger cutters. Little Miss Splendid topped the cake, along with a number 2 birthday candle. I love the effect of this cake, as if one was looking at a page out of a Mr. Men book! Happy 2nd Birthday, Zhen-Rei!
