For Charlotte's 1st birthday, Charlotte's mummy wanted a Finding Nemo cake just like this one. With just over two weeks notice, we were pushing our luck ordering the Finding Nemo and friends figurines online, from someone in Australia! The ETD was one day before the party!

The cake is Devil's Food Cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. The frosting and all the deco was done using vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream.
The seaweed was piped on using leaf tip no. 67, and a small round nozzle was used to pipe the red and yellow "coral" and sea stars.
I added small beads of royal icing around the cake to mimic tiny bubbles coming from the sea creatures in the water. I like the cute, whimsical effect.

As you've probably figured out by now, the original Finding Nemo toys that we ordered online didn't arrive in time! Had to resort to plan B and scramble for a suitable replacement. I should've just made fondant figurines to go on top of the cake, but I didn't have the time to do so!
Luckily, I found a someone selling some Finding Nemo toys locally! They were McDonald's Happy Meal toys, unopened in their original packaging from 2003! I had to buy the whole set, but could only fit Nemo, Dory and Squirt on top of the cake, since the toys were pretty big.
I love how the cake looks, though, with the over-sized fish and their adorable, happy eyes! They're like "baby" fish! Which is perfect since Charlotte's celebrating her 1st birthday!

I put a number one shaped candle on a lollipop stick so that it would be nice and tall on the cake and be visible above Nemo and his friends. Here are some pics courtesy of Charlotte's mummy. Happy 1st Birthday, baby Charlotte! Hope you had a wonderful first birthday celebration with all your family and friends.
