Elsa's Dress Frozen Pull-Apart Cake

One of my kids' good friend was celebrating her 5th birthday at school with a Frozen-themed party. Birthday celebrations at my kids' school isn't fancy. It's just a happy birthday song and cake during afternoon snack time. Other schools allow parents to throw more elaborate parties, involving bouncy castles, ball pits and magicians. No matter how a birthday is celebrated, the important thing is that the birthday celebrant is made to feel like a queen (or king) on their special day!

So the birthday girl's daddy sent me a text three days before Jackie's birthday saying, oops, I forgot to ask if you could do a cake for Jackie. I wasn't sure if I could help him out because May has been a really busy caking period for me! But I didn't want to let Jackie down so I said of course I could help, but nothing too complicated (like an Elsa Frozen Ice Palace Cake!)

Vanilla & Devil's Food Cake cupcakes

Alright, so Jackie's daddy said just do cupcakes, half vanilla, half chocolate, and throw a snowflake or two on top to tie it into the Frozen theme. But I wanted to surprise Jackie, so I made her this cupcake pull-apart dress cake instead! I'm a little sad cuz she's moving to Poughkeepsie in June and I won't be able to make her a birthday cake next year.

The cupcakes forming the white part of the dress were frosted with crusting American buttercream, mainly because Swiss meringue buttercream is an off-white colour and I wanted this to be a true white. The rest of the dress was frosted with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream, dyed teal. I added blue sugar pears in the centre of each rose swirl to give it that extra sparkle. You can't really see in the pic, but I also sprinkled blue sparkling sugar and white sparkling crystals all over the cake.

To accent the dress and make it more "Frozen" I cut out white and blue fondant snowflakes, and let them dry nice and hard before placing them around the cake. I cut Jackie's name out of white fondant using a fancy font tappits cutter, and again let the letters fully dry before placing them on the cake (or else the letters would sag and droop). To finish the cake, I made a fancy number 5, just by rolling some white fondant into a long thin snake and then shaping it and curling the edges.

The birthday girl's daddy let me know after the celebration that all the kids at school absolutely loved the cupcakes. And most importantly, Jackie loved her Frozen dress pull-apart cake! The teachers are hating me though, because this was a messy cake to eat, and I don't think Jackie's daddy brought plates! Chocolate crumbs all over the floor! Oh well. Happy 5th Birthday, sweet Jackie!!
