Injustice Superhero Cake & colourful macarons

This is more of a grown-up superhero cake, with the darker colours making for a more "serious" mood, unlike the bright blues, reds and yellows of this superhero cake. The birthday boy is really into playing this computer game called Injustice: Gods Among Us, so naturally, his birthday cake features some of his favourite characters from the game: Batman, Superman and Nightwing (Batman's son).

Injustice-themed Cake

Both cake tiers are Devil's Food Cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. To incorporate the characters on the cake, I went with re-creating their insignias, hand-cut out of fondant. I didn't need to make figurines because the birthday boy's mummy specially ordered the Injustice Batman, Superman and Nightwing action figures from Amazon in the US for this cake! What a lucky boy.

The bottom tier was all about Nightwing. The skyscraper background is based on a screenshot of NIghtwing's info page on the game. I mixed in a little red with the black and white fondant to create a reddish shade of grey, to compliment the colours of Nightwing's costume. Nightwing's insignia is a little bit like Batman's, but it's red.

Injustice Cake with Nightwing, Superman & Batman Logos

The top tier was covered in darker grey fondant, with the Injustice version of Superman's insignia in the middle. For you Superman fans, you can see that the Injustice version is elongated and is of a darker red colour than the original Superman logo.

The gold section behind the Superman "S" was painted with some gold lustre dust mixed with some vodka. I also added a red belt and a cape behind the cake, even though the Injustice Superman doesn't have a belt, cuz otherwise the two tiers of grey would just blend into each other.

To top the cake is the super cool buckle of Injustice Batman's belt. I painted the gold section with the same gold lustre dust mixed with vodka to give it that extra special shine. I stuck a long skewer on the back to help it stand up on the cake.

The "Blessed 8th Birthday" message was cut out of fondant using letter cutters and then painted with gold lustre dust after the letters had dried. I'm really digging the feel of this black-grey-dark red-gold colour combination. Makes for a mature cake for sure. At 8 years old, one can't be having Mickey Mouse-themed birthdays anymore, I guess.

Samuel's mummy wanted to surprise him with a box of colourful macarons for his birthday as well, since he loves macarons. The colours remind me of teenage mutant ninja turtles, or even a Mardis Gras king cake! The macarons are all filled with dark chocolate ganache. Maybe his next birthday might be TMNT-themed! ;)

Here's the final cake, complete with the Injustice action figures! I stuck them down using a little black royal icing when I got to the venue, and used a couple of skewers to help stand Batman on top of the cake. I was worried about how long the cake could withstand the humidity because the celebration was in the school's un-airconditioned canteen! The cake was already getting really shiny even after just 15 mins in the warm and humid environment, and Batman was starting to slowly dent the fondant that he was standing on. Luckily, the cake made it through the next 20 minutes and the kids completely devoured it, with some asking for seconds and even thirds! I'm so glad everyone loved it. Devil's Food Cake is definitely the most popular, crowd-pleasing flavour! Happy 8th Birthday, Samuel!

Blessed 8th Birthday, Samuel!
