Batman watermelon fresh fruit cake |
After brain-storming a whole list of chocolate-covered desserts and baked goodies, she decided that she was going to forgo all the typical sugar-loaded desserts, and go for a fresh fruit cake instead!! And I don't mean a vanilla sponge cake topped with fresh fruit either. I'm talking about a cake made of 100% fruit. Here's what I did:
getting our fruit on |
Since the party was Batman-themed I really wanted to get yellow and black fruit, with yellow watermelon making up the bulk of the cake. I was stressing over where to find yellow watermelons cuz they had been out of stock for the past month or so. I even kept my eyes peeled for them on a recent trip to Brunei, but no dice. I was almost desperate enough to drive over to Malaysia to snag one.
elusive yellow watermelon! |
Two days before the party, I finally found yellow watermelons!! And there were only 5 yellow watermelons left. I bought 2 just in case!!
skinning a watermelon |
It was straightforward to prepare the watermelon. Cut out the fattest part of the watermelon from the middle section, and then remove all the green skin until you're only left with the yellow flesh. Try to carve it into as smooth a round shape as possible, like an actual cake. This one ended up to be slightly larger than 5" in diameter after carving.
how many fruits do you see? |
I brainstormed what other yellow and black fruits I could use to decorate the cake. Strawberries would look great on a fruit cake, but they're bright red and totally don't match! Blackberries came to mind, but again, I couldn't find any (as usual, when you need something, you can't find it. But when you don't need it, there's plenty to be had!) But, I did score cherries, apricots, pineapples and blueberries!

The blueberries were used to create a border around the cake. I pitted the apricots and sliced them in half, arranging them in a fan around the top of the cake, filling the center space with a few cherries.

Now to inject Batman into the cake, I wanted to put the Bat symbol on there. Without the usual buttercream or fondant to do that in, I had to get creative.... My mind went to avocados. Avocados have black skin and would be perfect to cut the Bat symbol out of! The avocado I used wasn't too ripe, which made it difficult to separate the skin from the flesh. But it was a good thing in the end, cuz I was able to poke a toothpick into the bit of flesh stuck that was still stuck on to the skin and use that to hold the bat symbol onto the watermelon cake.

To add more detail, I cut stars out of pineapple slices, using a star plunger cutter. The firmer part of the pineapple, closer to the centre makes for better stars. I used toothpicks to hold the stars onto the cake.
I really love how this cake turned out! It's a super healthy choice, being made of 100% fresh fruit, and it still has elements to tie it into the Batman theme! Plus it's something very different from your mainstream buttercream and fondant cakes! Definitely a memorable cake.

The birthday boy's mummy set up her own cake table, which made for a great place to take pics. The balloons and awesome banner were from All Mommy Wants, based on the birthday boy's mummy's sketch!

love the 12-month photo bunting!* |
The life-sized photo standees were from One and Only Gallery. I liked the unique poses of Batman and Batgirl crouching down, though it was a bit of a challenge to fit them into my car!
