Ever since the release of Pokémon Go, there has been a newfound popularity with Pokémon. Like Tamagotchis, Pokémon has long since been around! I remember when I was in high school (a loooong time ago), Pokémon was the hot new in-thing. I even went to go see the first Pokémon movie (which is titled "Pokémon: The First Movie" hahahah!) in the theatre and had Pikachu plush toys decorating the back window of my good ol' VW Jetta! (which, by the way, was broken into and the only things that were stolen were those Pikachu plush toys. Too cute that even thieves can't resist them, I suppose :P)

Pokémon Sugar Cookies |
Anyway, usually with Pokémon-themed parties, the request is for Pokéballs and Pikachus. I was already challenged to make Pikachu, Dragonite, Lapras and Snorlax full body cookies last December. And now, I had to make Mega Absol, Mega Aggron, Mega Greninja, Mega Lucario and Mega Manectric! Who in the what now?!? That's right people, it's time to Google. These crazy dudes are characters from Pokémon Mega Evolution. Yes, Mega Evolution. Whoa!! This is a whole new thing. Didn't have these guys in the 90's! (In fact, I only learned the names while writing up this blog post, cuz I was only sent their pictures!)
The birthday boy and his brothers have always been into "unusual" video games for their birthday themes, like Injustice, Growtopia & Team Fortress 2, and I've had the pleasure of creating cakes for them in these themes in the past! This year, challenging Pokémon Mega Evolution cookies, it is!!

Rainbow Royal Icing colours |
Actually, it's been a crazy cookie decorating week, and all these characters and designs means lots of different colours! It's pretty neat to line up all the royal icing bags to see all the colours! Tinting the icing already takes up a few hours in itself!

With the icing ready, making Pokéballs is pretty straightforward. The only thing is that you have to make sure that the white section is completely dry before piping in the coloured section, and then wait 'til that's completely dry before piping on the black line in the middle. Bright colours then to bleed into each other, otherwise. For the button in the middle of the cookies, I cut circles out of fondant just to make things a little easier.

And now for the tough part: those Mega Evolution characters! I was requested to make them as round cookies, and instead of drawing them all full-body with crazy details, I chose to focus on a section of each of their faces, which turned out to be pretty cool cuz it's like a teaser glimpse into the actual characters.

Free-hand drawing and piping just a round section of each of the five characters' faces still took me a good 5 hours, outlining and flooding in all the different colours, waiting for each section to dry before filling in the next section. I really do love how they came out!! All abstract and complicated. So cool.

Gotta catch 'em all |
The Pokéball and Pokémon Evolution character cookies were part of this awesome Pokémon dessert table, put together by the talented All Mommy Wants. Isn't the backlit tablecloth with the characters Mega Lucario & Mega Absol so cool? Love the effect.

To see more pics of the awesomeness, head on over to their Facebook page here! I love how they even Pokémon-ified (yes, that's is a word!!) the hot food like Pokéball spaghetti cups, sausages in customized Pokéball bento boxes & chicken nuggets and wings in energy symbol containers! Too cool!

The highlight of the birthday cake is the super crazy detailed Pokemon Mega Evolution macaron tower, meticulously made by Milleaville! I mean, I had a tough time piping just their faces for the cookies, but these guys are full-body characters!

Baker's Heart never fails to impress with their super smooth fresh whipped cream-iced Pokéball birthday cake. Really don't know how they can get the surface so perfect!
The only credit I can take for this cake is the "Blessed 10th Birthday Samuel" fondant plaque, which was moulded using a Katy Sue mini domed alphabet mould and standard letter cutters in "Pokémon" colours. (Still happy to be a part of the cake, even though I didn't make it!)
And of course, the cake is even more of a centrepiece, displayed atop a 3-tier towering cake stand, filled with Sugarena's yummy lemon meringue tarts!
