Kalista's mummy asked if I could make a Sylvanian family cake for Kalista's 1st birthday. I said sure, but what's a Sylvanian family? Apparently, Sylvanian families are cute little toy animals that play "house" in a world called Sylvania. There's all sorts of different families, like Rabbits, Owls, Bears, Racoons and Foxes to name a few. For Kalista's cake, her mummy wanted the Rabbit family: mummy Rabbit, daddy Rabbit and a little girl Rabbit.

The little rabbits were so fun to make, especially their clothing. I shaped the rabbits out of fondant, using some toothpicks to help hold up their ears. The dots on mummy Rabbit's apron and the pattern on daddy Rabbit's shirt were drawn on using edible food markers. For the little girl Rabbit's polka dot dress, I added the teeny white spots using a toothpick dipped in white food colouring. I even added some texture to the "fabric" behind her yellow daisy flower button using a textured roller.

The Sylvanian Rabbit family fondant toppers went on top of 2-tier Devil's Food Cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache and chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream. The birthday girl's mummy was preparing a black and white dessert table so the cake's colour scheme had to compliment that. I love the effect of the small white polka dots on the black. The border of pearls made of white candy Sixlets adds a touch of class. I added a black fondant bow in the centre of the cake as well to finish the look.

In addition to the cake, I got to make some yummy orange chocolate chunk cupcakes, frosted with orange Swiss meringue buttercream. These babies have the zest and juice of two whole Cara Cara navel oranges. I usually use Valencia, but these oranges looked nice and fresh so I bought them. Imagine my surprise when I cut them open and they were red inside! Apparently they are of the blood orange family. They taste like normal oranges, but the flesh is a such a lovely red colour, like a grapefruit!

I was happy to find these sleek black paper liners at the baking store. They were perfect. The only thing is that the cupcakes baked up rather oval than round for some reason! The cupcakes were simple frosted with a classic swirl to finish them off.

Kalista's mummy put together this sweet dessert table. I love the photos of baby Kalista and the little lantern house lit with a votive candle. She even prepared a little menu of all the sweets on the table. I hope all the party guests enjoy all the sweets on the table. Happy 1st birthday, baby Kalista!
