Mickey Mouse Cookies & Cake Pops

So happy to have successfully completed our first Giveaway contest via our Facebook Page today! Our lucky winners were very happy with one dozen Mickey cookies and cake pops each! I used AgoraPulse to randomly select the two lucky winners. This app was a breeze to use, not to mention free!

Basket of Mickey Cookies and Cake Pops

The Mickey cookies are sugar cookies with a light vanilla flavour. As long as they're kept in an airtight container, these cookies can last months! They are decorated with fondant, which I cut using my handy dandy Mickey-shaped cookie cutter. They are made in the same way as these Mickey and Minne cookies, with the black and red parts being cut and then spliced back together, rather than being layered on top of each other.

For the buttons, I could've taken the easy way out and just left them as circles (I cut them out using a no. 12 round piping tip), but when I put the oval and circle toppers side by side, I thought the oval buttons looked better and were worth the extra effort to hand-make.

The cake pops are red velvet cake, swirled with vanilla buttercream. I dipped them in melted white chocolate, which was coloured red using powdered red food colouring. Never use water-based food colouring to dye chocolate, as this will cause the chocolate to seize and become unusable. For more cake pop making tips, do check out my Cake Pops Basics page. The oval fondant buttons were hand-shaped, just like the ones for the Mickey cookies above.

I wrapped the cookies and cake pops in cellophane to keep them fresh. Unwrapped cake pops should NOT be stored in the fridge, as condensation will form on the surface once they're taken out of the fridge. These water droplets will ruin the aesthetics of the cake pops. Of course, they will still taste good. You can put cake pops wrapped in cellophane or in a ziplock bag in the fridge, no problem! They'll last longer refrigerated (a week or more, but then, why wouldn't you just want to gobble them all up immediately?). I've seen commercially produced cake pops selling in the Freezer section of the supermarket, but most of these cake pops have cracks in them, so I'm not sure if freezing them is a good idea. They'll last much longer for sure, if you don't mind having cracked cake pops. I will have to run my own experiment and see if they crack after being thawed from the freezer.

Looks like one of the Giveaway winners, and her friend that she shared the goodies with, enjoyed the cake pops! So glad they liked them! Congratulations again to our lucky winners. Thanks everyone, for your support!
