The birthday boy couldn't decide what kind of truck he wanted for his birthday cake. He's really into trucks, but he had to pick just one! At first he wanted a shower loader, with a Bob the Builder figurine. Then, a couple weeks before his birthday, his mummy said he changed his mind. He wanted a garbage truck instead!

The birthday boy takes his trucks seriously. His mummy made sure to send me lots of reference pics, specifically of BrĂ¼der's Scania R-series rear loading toy garbage trucks, so that I could capture the details.

The cake is a tall 4 layers of Devil's food cake, filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache and chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream. I baked it in two 11' x 15' pans, and then cut those in half and stacked them together to make a tall cake. Hadriel's mummy didn't want the whole cake covered in fondant because not too many people like the taste of fondant (my son loves it, though!) I iced the "sky" with vanilla buttercream dyed sky blue, and then used the same buttercream dyed green for the grass, piped using a grass piping tip.
I printed out the image of the garbage truck and glued it on some cardboard, and then carefully cut it out. I used that as a template to cut the truck out of fondant, using an Xacto knife. I added the detailing onto the body of the truck in same way, using the template and carefully cutting with the Xacto knife. I added a number 5 (instead of a 2) on the truck and the birthday boy's name for the license plate, since it was his 5th birthday.
To set the scene, I added a road, some trees and some clouds behind the truck. The little rocks were made with some grey and black fondant marble together. To complete the scene, I moulded a handsome garbage man figurine, a garbage can, a couple of recycling bins and some pylons out of fondant. The garbage even has garbage coming out of it!
