Little Mermaid Cake

I have been wracking my brains to come up with a cake design for a Little Mermaid cake for a boy! I guess most people usually associate the Little Mermaid, if not all the Disney Princesses, with girls! I couldn't make a Little Mermaid doll cake, that's for sure. And I didn't want to use pinks and purples and pearls on the cake cuz that would make it too feminine.

The Little Mermaid-themed cake

Instead, I settled on an "under the sea" design, using blue, red, yellow and green to keep it suitable for a boy. The cake is devil's food cake, filled with dark chocolate ganache, dirty iced with chocolate French buttercream and decorated with vanilla French buttercream.

Under-the-sea seaweed,  coral and starfish details

The green seaweed was piped on using a no. 104 (the same tip used for piping roses!). I used a no. 5 round nozzle to pipe the star fish and the coral.

Birthday boy's name, Flounder-style!

I cut the birthday boy's name out of fondant and decorated to look like Flounder (Ariel's best fish friend). All the figurine toppers are plastic toys.

Happy 7th Birthday, Zachary!
